On my last trip during Super Bowl weekend, I went over to the Monkey Bar to say hello to the bartenders. I prefer hanging around there rather than the DR. I found a whole new crew on both day and night shifts. When I asked where the other bartenders had gone, all I got was that they no longer worked at the Monkey Bar.

I even e-mailed one of the bartenders i had spent time with and asked what's up, but no answer.

Seems like they cleaned house. Anyone know why?

I too am very sorry to hear about Miguel's departure. He was a truly great friend of mine over the years. When I last saw him mid Jan last month, he gave no sign of an impeding change :(

Do not know of the internal politics of the Del Rey ownership--- Big John, Greg ,et al. , but something smells "fishy" here.

Last Nov I had a discussion with Big John about his future plans--he was reluctant about details, but admitted to having bought a luxury penthouse condo in Cartagena , Colombia and spending a lot of time there. :?

He is also going to bring his 67 ft catamaran around from Puntarenas to Cartagena--already has a smaller sailboat there.

A rumor--- and yes, a great fear-- in the Cartagena expat community is that Big John is going to open up a "Del Rey" type operation there
That IS really BAD News , even to me :( Another "Gulchfull" of fat ass Gringos would surely despoil the CTG scene completely

I am going back to Cartagena in a few weeks---so will be glad not have to run into Big J. there since he is so busy handling the situation in San Jose. :)

Would it not be shocking to run into Miguelito there, {in Cartagena} though :?: :o :o :o

Will keep you informed

Cygnus

I have been friends with Miguel before he worked at the delRey, when he was with Coast to Coast adventures. He left the delRey once, but returned.

When big John and the guys decided to buy the Largo a few years ago, plus most of the block, Miguel's role changed.

My brother happened to be standing behind Miguel a few weeks ago when he received a phone call. He turned around and pretty much told my brother he was let go.

A sad day indeed for us old timers. This guy was a good friend, and someone who totally understood the mindset of the monger, as well as the ladies, and trust me, he knew them all up close and personal.

I wish him the best of luck, and hope one day things work out and he is able to return.

Pura vida,

Dman

Dman,it's so good to see you posting even though it took a sad event to bring you out. Now don't be a stranger.I hope we now get to see your ugly face here in SJ. The chicas who are under 80 pounds need more business. I have heard rumors about why Miguel was let go at the DRand KL but I think it best not to speculate.I am going to try to get more info. I too enjoyed his presence.

Hey Easy, come to think of it now I didn't even noticed that Miguel hasn't been seen during these last 2 trips that I was in CR. I also like Miguel as he was the only management at the Delrey who would come up to me, greet me and gave me a firm handshake. He did that every time he sees me and I've always appreciated that. I don't know him that well but I've always appreciate his willingness to take care of any problems I have at the Delrey. I'm sorry to see him go.

I was told directly by a long time employee that it was a result of a fight that took place between 3 KL bartenders and 3 providers. According to the employee, Miguel encouraged the very physical fight to continue and did nothing to break it up. There were several injuries involved as well as the polica.

I too will miss him. He was always there with a handshake and a pleasant word or two.

I have no idea why Miguel is no longer with the DR. I do however know (from personal experience) that if he can get his shit together he will be much better off.

Hola Rabbit GoT

There is no comparison between Blue Marlin Del Rey and LDV in Cartagena.

LDV is just a bar-disco with limited action 11PM to 4 AM -- :(
15-20 chicas at most hustling for Italian , Israeli , Canuck, and a few Gringo turistas. Aldo the owner gets most of the "Action"

Still is a good spot to pick up a late entry for 'Last Resort'

Enjoy , nevertheless. Hope to meet ya there .

Zeeke-- Miss you. The DR scene has not been by bag since you left there  :(

Zeeke, I agree. It seemed Miguel was always high or out of kilter the past year or so...not as friendly as before. Sometimes having to move on can be the best thing for a person. I'm sure we all wish him well...and know he'll end up somewhere.

I spoke with Greg yesterday. He is the secondary owner of the Del Rey.I asked him if he could or would respond to the Miguel not being there any longer. His response was that it was best to leave sleeping dogs lie.He said that he was sure that the change would be good for all the parties involved. (it sounded like that was in the DRs best interest) Eventually I'm sure someone will get Miguel's side of things.

Sounds like someone really high up in the DR has forgotten to take his prozac as upper management heads continue to roll.

Miguel is a great person, I consider him a friend.

However, his behavior changed over the last 1 1/2 year. He was taking cocaine and was often drunk while at the Key Largo.

That's the main reason he was let go. I wish they would fire Chad though!
