I have avoided learning anything about piratesbay and places like that because I've been afraid of bugs and haven't really needed anything.

I'd like to get Rosetta Stone, though, and am considering taking the plunge. Someone recommended http://www.vuze.com/ to me as a way to start. Can anyone vouch for the safety of that site? Also, can you tell me anything or point me to anything I might want to read before I cross over to the dark side? (I'm thinking how-to stuff, not why-not arguments.)

Vuze is just a program to download torrents. You have to first download the program and install, then go find the torrents at sites like piratebay and isohunt. I prefer utorrent over vuze as it uses less RAM so it won't slow down your computer. You do have to worry about viruses or malware of certain files you download. Just use a good anti-virus program to scan the file before you open the file. I have only experienced a virus once while downloading from torrents, but that doesn't mean that they're not more prevalent. I mostly download movies, shows and music so I don't run into much problems. I have downloaded rosetta stone and was able to install it with no problems on both my computer and my wingman's computer. But I would still scan everything you download to make sure you encounter viruses as they suck and are a pain in the ass to remove. Good luck!!

+1 for utorrent.

Vuze is a pretty large program with a bunch of unnecessary extras. Bittorrent is also another great alternative to vuze. Please when and if you find a good working Rosetta Stone "torrent" file, share with your bros here on the site, We will highly appreciate it (especially me!)

I understand from other Brothers here that MegaUpload and RapidLibrary have both this and Pimsleur available. There are alternatives to both these language courses. I'll be posting later on this subject.

http://www.usenext.com is a swell outfit that might just suit your needs. FREE TRIAL, too. Dedicated servers with very high speed downloads make it a vast improvement over a "typical" bit torrent client.

The "search engine" in UseNext is fabulous for anything, including software.....
