I second what DiegoC said. It is not absolutely necessary in many cases, but I think better safe than sorry.

Perhaps I missd it but in reading the two posts DiegoC made on this topic I fail to see where he recommended getting an IDP as a precautionary measure. Perhaps you could enlighten me.

A number of CRT members have rented a car in Costa Rica. It would be interesting if they would post if they have ever been asked to produce an international driving permit to rent a car.

Never been asked for it. Honestly, I didn't know it even existed until I read this thread.

They accepted my US drivers license as proof of driving skills. I am surprised they didn’t issue my CR license with my CDL number on it.

Did you take a close look at your CR DL number?
Mine is my passport number!

I guess that since extranjeros don't have a CR cedula and use their passport for ID that MOPT decided to use the passport # for a DL number. I don't care for the idea. Couldn't they just assign a number?

Everything in CR is geared to your cedula number. It is comparable to you social security number in the U.S. in that every citizen or legal resident has one. It makes sense to use that as your DL number. As far as assigning numbers sure it could be done but why? Even the U.S. military gave up assigning service numbers years ago and switched to using social security numbers.

39 years later I still remember my USMC #--2174340. Something you never forget--there were only in 190 years before me, 2,174,339, the bulk of whom served in WW II. The few, the proud, the Marines. BTW, be sure to watch the 10-part mini-series The Pacific--absolutely the real deal--done with the active, no, make that fervent participation of the men it portrays. Semper Fi to those who qualify. Remember many of those in WW II were drafted into the Corps--sofuckingwhat--they came out of boot camp as full-fledged Marines, same as the voluntary enlistees like me.

Man i loved Band of Brothers, it had special meaning for me. Made me appreciate the entire WWII generation in a whole new way, and veterans as well. I ended up buying the series on DVD. I plan to watch the sister series, The Pacific, as well. I can only hope it is as good as BOB.

No one who served in the military, pre social security number, will ever forget their service number. It was indelibly pounded into your brain for all eternity.

Western: My Costa Rica driver license has a unique number, meaning it is neither my passport number nor my cedula number. The new cedulas are about half the length of the old.

Srlim is right about non-standardization of driver’s licenses. There is a book that is published each year which contains the depiction of all of the types of driver’s licenses and identification cards issued by all of the U.S. states, U.S. territories, Canadian provinces, and Canadian territories.

There is a similar book which depicts most legitimate IDs from around the world. The service is also available on-line. The books are about $25 a piece and are sold widely to law enforcement, military, various government alphabet agencies, and some business like banks, private investigators, and big retail stores, mostly in house loss prevention.

A big debate coming our way – again – is the national ID card for workers.

Also used by establishments that sell alcoholic beverages to screen false ID used by und***ge drinkers particularly in areas with a large college population where many different state ID's are normal.
