I've been trying to book a room for the last two days. These people seem like they have enough business already and don't care if you book a room or not. The phone would just ring and no one would pick up. Finally would get a hold of someone, I would be put on hold and then disconnected. Then when they did pick up, there was an enormous amount of background noise, like the guy was standing in a wind tunnel, and they can't wait to get off the phone with you. Kind of like when a telemarketer calls you and you just want nothing more but to hang up on him. I asked about the CRT discount and they said they don't know but will call me back when they find out. I guarantee you they won't, in fact I will cut off my left nut if they do. Anyway, I don't really care cause I love to stay there. Sure the service is bad but screw it. Pura Vida

You got that nailed they could care less. You could retire and live luxuriously on just the daily chica fee they collect.

CRT Discount :?: Del Rey :?: Never has and never will happen.

As a newbie I stood there several times and thought I was doing the right thing. Now I know different, the HDR sucks!! There really is no reason to stay there and pay double for crap just for pure laziness. The Boutique Hotels in places like Barrion Amon etc, are clean and a great deal (especially the CRT discount) with easy walking access to the MPs and a very short taxi ride to the HDR if you get a yen for the Belly of the Beast. BTW, I can afford the HDR but why pay more for nothing??

Ho Hum, so what else is new!! I think another poster got all of our CRT discounts removed, I just can't think of any other place to stay. Guess I will have to move on from SJO as there are no other decent places to stay. You couldn't pay me to stay there :!: :!:
How about those other trashy hotels where they don't give you any CRT discounts :?: :?: :?:
Like
Sportsmen's
Amistad
Dunn Inn
Castillo
And others,
Food sucks, beer is warm, service lousy, and no CRT discounts :!: :!: Guess you will have to gut it out and try one these less than stellar hotels, good luck

The lovers and haters of the HDR have rehashed this topic to the point of nausea. I ignore the place--the hotel part that is. As Brother Zunbake3 said, there are too many logical alternatives. The Chica fee is a non-starter when you consider you'll spend close to that for taxi fare--a wash, in other words. The "We don't care because we don't have to" attitude is another matter entirely. Love it , hate it--you're not going to change it.

I've seen the rooms and for what they charge, it just ain't worth it. For a little more I can get a lot better, and even when traveling in Central America, I like to do it with some style if I can. If not, I can take just about anything, but only if nothing better is available.

Not sure where you are taking a taxi to/from that you are going to be spending over 6000 colones on cab fare. At least you are getting a service when you get a ride and pay the fare you get absolutely nothing of value for paying the HDR extortion charge.

Disagree:

In my humble opinion: there is value attached to the room upgrade. When I am asked about staying at the DelRey ( and here lately it has been a lot ) one of the positives that I list is that it is one of the most secure buildings in San Jose. Significantly it is a member of the security team that collects the room upgrade. You could think of it as a security tax. If you're doing your shopping at the DelRey there are many other benefits attached. You and your newly found love do not have to step out onto the less than safe streets of San Jose. What ever the price there is no taxi fee. You get to take your young lovely up a side elevator out of the view of the general public. Eliminating that some times embarrassing moment with real terrorists.

To continue: I remember once reading of a member who reported waking up in his room to find his date missing along with his luggage and computer. Highly unlikely that a young lady stepping out of an elevator at the DelRey with computer and luggage in hand would not be questioned.

Not wishing to flame the fires of the DelRey controversy I'll stop my list this time. We all have different opinions, likes and dislikes, standards (perceived or imagined) and yes prejudices. It's what makes this such a fun group. I like the place and staying there works for me.If you don't like it and stay away that works for me to.

Lee

I have no opinion either way on the pro or con of staying at the HDR. I would like to point out that many other hotels provide security that would not allow a chica to walk out with your computer and luggage unchallenged and they provide that service with out an $11.30 charge.

Well, OK, the diff between taxi fare and the Chica fee is not exactly a wash (though I was thinking R/T taxi fare) but brings the outrage about the fee down somewhat--to a bit less than extortionate level--though I agree it smacks of extortion. A question that can never be settled overall, just to each man's satisfaction yea or nay.

E-mail the Del Rey with your dates. They will e-mail you back with a list of available rooms and rates for the dates you requested. Be sure to ask for their 20% discount that they are offering.

You could not pay me to stay there.

I am sure for the right $$ a girl could walk out of the HDR carrying anything she wanted.
