I've been reading the posts here on prepaid SIMS and would like to know if anyone has been able to use their US phones with the 3G in CR. Also, has anyone had their US phone unlocked by either AT& T or T-Mobile? If so, does your phone work effectively?

Thanks. Trying to decide if I should purchase a cheap Nokia which I can unlocked for free, or to use my regular phone in CR.

I have AT&T service in USA when I go to CR there is no 3G service. so Edge service is used however it is expensive since you are roaming. I have an unlocked AT&T Issued phone and it work fine with the SIM Chip that is use by ICE in CR. you should have no problem with their GSM Service. GSM is a wireless Communication standard. and it is followed by all country that deploy GSM service..

I had 3 T-mobile phones unlocked by Tmobile and I can use them with the prepaid SIM in CR. They work perfectly, at least for voice and SMS (no data).

I take a cheapie Motorola V191 to walk around with, and leave my BB Bold 9700 in the safe.

I would suggest that you look on e-bay. They sell all types of quad band, for less than you can buy local. You can also pick up some used phones at very good prices. I purchase a Samsung i607 unlocked Quad. I chose that for the qwerty, and quad.

You can buy a locked quad band, and several sites on e-bay will sell the unlock codes for under $ 3.00.

Health & happiness to all.........

At&t will unlock some phones, depending on the time you have had it. They will not unlock any iPhone!

There is now 3G in Costa Rica, it is not available via prepaid SIMS. Normal service contract must be purchased and from what I have heard those are only available to residents and businesses.

If you have an unlocked 3g phone it should work as a normal gsm phone. Turning off the 3g will conserve battery life.

I had no problem texting or making calls back to the states or any where else using my AT&T I-phone 3Gs. I can't really say how expensive it was using it because I don't really look that closely at the bill. Being able to get call on my phone is more important to me than the cost so, I may be a little different than some guys plus the bill is paid by the company. There is no 3G service though.

Not to forget that MagicJack, a netbook and a cheap handset works everywhere you have WiFi access. Here's a ringing endorsement (pun intended) from the WSJ's tech columnist:
