Juilliano, flags are a big deal in Costa Rican politics too. Each political party has its colors and flag. The colors/logos are ballot identifiers.

Flags are also a big deal for the soccer teams, a really BIG deal. Back in the 80s when I was a newbie in CR, and I first saw the Liga flag ,I thought that the Sandanista’s were invading CR. As a newbie, I had no idea how seriously they took futbol and their respective team colors.

The goal of a politician is to get reelected. Since a CR politician can only serve four years, then sit out four years before running again, the dynamic is a little different than the US or Canada. Here the goal is to keep the party in power and to get all you can during the four years you are in power.

As Bang Bang said, they aren’t going to close down Tico MPs. It would be political suicide for the party. There would be an internal (national) uprising over that. If the administration in power were to embarrass a few influential Ticos, there will be a serious price to pay.

The target is flagrancy – blatant, obvious, brazen public displays of mongering. That is a Gringo thing, not a Tico thing. Ticos are far more subtle and discrete about their liaisons and extra families. Bringing shame and embarrassment to one’s wife and family is a very serious social breach. It could affect not only ones community standing it could affect ones business dealings.

On the other hand, Gringos who come down as “invisible” snow-birds from Frost Bite Falls, who act like a K*D in a candy store with a pocket full of money, cannot help themselves. They want to release the years of pent up frustrations, the years-and-years where the only thing they could do was to salivate over a sweet young thing. Now for chump change they can have a soft, warm, tight body instead of the old cow they are married to.

Of course humans, and in this case Gringos, are going to act like fools until they realize it is not just a dream, they can have this everyday and they don’t have to flaunt it. The flaunting phenomenon is similar to the malady displayed by the nouveau-riche: those who have suddenly attained wealth but do not have the ability to understand how to deal with the increased in economic status. They flaunt it.

The governmental control tactics will probably be harassment. I know what I would do if I were in charge. It could be closed it down in weeks. Since I am sure these public and probably our private pages are monitored, no plan will be forth coming them from this monger.

They are going to use the solid, tried and true harassment tactics of the past – immigration checks, building and safety checks, fire safety checks, etc.

But even in Costa Rica there are rights and a separation of powers. Related businesses could go to the courts to seek relief from harassment. The fact that the PLN controls both the administration and the courts is a disconcerting, but there are avenues of redress.

Anybody wanting to know what the possible/ probable impact of this election will be on us--read Brother DiegoC's Posts from this weekend. Every one on-point and pretty much all that you need to know. And broken up into bite-size chunks too. Excellent job, Brother.
