I think that the next four years are going to be very trying for Costa Rica. The Costa Rican government has turned more and more toward increased taxes that benefit specific groups rather than the good of the general public.

The government has instituted heavy taxation bordering on the punitive; they have demonstrated highly discriminatory treatment of specific groups – some special groups benefit while other special groups are harmed. That special treatment has allowed some to circumvent numerous laws including tax laws, international Ch*ld abduction laws, and so on.

The Chinchilla Administration will be a continuation of the Arias years. Speculation is that it will be very unfriendly to certain segments of the population and economy.

If punitive treatment continues, I believe that investments and tourism will slowly begin to shrivel. The slow decline will be exacerbated when Fiddel Castro finally dies and Cuba is opened to US investment. Costa Rica doesn’t have much competition, who wants to invest in Nicarauga or Venezuela. Everyone knows capital is fleeing those unstable economies. But the reopening of Cuba -- that would provide several reasons for making it a tourism and investment destination of US dollars and capital.

As money pours into the heretofore isolated island nation investments in Costa Rica and one of its economic engines –the tourism industry - will weaken and contract. The people will suffer and in four years the PLN will lose its grip on power. :|

During her acceptance speech, Laura invoked Pepe Figueres in several occasions.

Figueres was the founder of her party, but also a member of the Caribbean Legion.

Not surprising. Figueres was the founder of the PLN political party to which she belongs. Present day U.S. Democrat politicians quote Kennedy and Republicans quote Regan. Doesn't necessarily mean they will have an administration that remotely resembles the person they supposedly are patterning themselves on.

I remember a few years ago I walking a few blocks away from the HDR and a mother with her 2 K*ds grabbed them and walked down another street away from the HDR and she told her K*ds that a bad place with putas was down that street....

It made me realize alot of people may accept ticos going to MP's and other services but the HDR is a single concentration of gringo.... the new prez made make life more difficult for the HDR only because its such an easy target... she would be fighting forreigners coming to CT to exploit young girls... gotta admit it sounds good...

btw.... the new prez in Panama has been tightening immigration and deporting alot of colombianas and dominicans... but the business in Panama is much more spread out and harder to close down... I see no real effect on business..

also, the new prez in Panama is somewhat more socialist, he installed a social security type program all seniors over 70 get $100 a month, that's $100 more than they ever had, not surprisingly the poor love him....

I don't think that Ticos will put up with outlawing prostitution, after all it is part of the Latino culture.

Latinos don't accept or condone prostitution. A small part of the population may not have a problem with it, but the vast majority does and would love to see it gone for good, along with the gringos who only come for the putas.

Yes, I would say a large number of Ticos consider the Del Rey to be ba massive blight on their country. It is everthing they resent about sex tourism: Loud drunken fat old gringos who come solely to parade the Ticos' daughters around in public. Few tears will be shed by the locals if the Del Rey was to be run out of town.

Ticos use massage parlors, or, more commonly, the love motels. Discretion is how they roll. Some guys here should learn that lesson.

Is the sky falling? Time will tell. I am of the opinion that she has a lot more on her plate than the Del Rey. I do myself. So do we all, if we put a little effort into it.

The question I have is how long do we have? When is she scheduled
to officially take office. I have trip schedules for end of the month
so should I be worried?

Although storm clouds seem to be gathering, I think it will be a while before PFP will be outlawed in CR, if at all. It is a significant portion of the turista income, and money talks. Linda the Rodent may talk, but if the economy sucks, CR will need all of the tourist income it can get, or they will find a new politician.

HikerTom, your observation about discretion is 100 percent on target. I have been writing about that for years.

When the marshall or other cops hunt down a suspect 8) they count on him or her being loud mouthed and talking  ; bragging about who they are and what they have done.

If you keep your mouth shut and blend-in you can go on essentially forever, doing what you want to do and no one will notice; and if they do figure it out they won’t care because you blend-in.

There isn’t too much to worry about for a while. Indeed nothing may materialize from our worries. But if it does, we should have some warning. The more or less invisible and discrete MPs will remain, places will Eden will continue to thrive.

Some years ago, 10+ by now, CR had become known as a destination of weirdo M-F’ers who boink small h*irless  c*i*d*ren. Those puke-phucks are not mongers, they are something else but . . . it ain’t good.

Anyway, there were a couple of expos on US-TV and the CR gov pulled out all the stops to bring it to an end. One of the remnants of that period is that card board cut out at the airport after you clear Customs where the warning is posted.

The reaction was swift and severe. Cops from at least one major city in the US were brought down to advise the gov what to do. It stopped in less than a year.

It is true that liaisons with consenting adults are far different than the sickness of the other subject, but focus on the point which is when they want to unite and do something, they can act quickly and they will.

Discrete phuck motels and MPs will still be around; I think places like the SL and DR will still be there, but the activities outside the walls will be far more constrained. There will probabaly be some bureaucratic harrassment as well. But few things cut red tape more quickly than green scissors and CR bureaucrats love green. Maybe that is what laura was talking about when she said she wanted to develop the green industry.

Just keep a low profile. Don’t prance around town in loud shirts, shorts that expose legs so white they can blind you, and flaunting your money and the sweet young thing on your arm.

Some guys are so crass and inane they could phuck up a wet dream.

Diego, you are so right. I agree that a low profile is key, and I detest loudmouth braggarts.
Some guys need to quiet down and wise up, get some class.

It seems like Laura has always had a hard on for the Del Rey. I can see huge problems in thier future. It would be hard for them to change thier business model to make it less on her radar. At least the activity at the SL is more confined to inside and therefore less visible than fat old gringos parading the little darlings down avenda central.
