Talking about that CR earthquake, I think Brother Pops is on to something. When a large group of soldiers has to march across a bridge, they are told to march out of step (route step, it's called) so the combined harmonics don't bring the bridge down.
Now scientists are saying the pressure build-up has been relieved for now but expect this or worse in 40 or so years, and Jamaica in the next hundred. This one was predicted in '08 and not in some obscure journal either. Of course it didn't help Haiti that their buildings were built wih NO rebar and sub-standard concrete. It actually helped the poor in the slums that they're mainly single-story buildings of flimsier materials.

the real tragedy is that really no way haiti will recover from this no matter what good intentions and cash flow into that country.
theres a reason for the third world always existing. the leaders of those countries will never improve the lives of their people. if they do then the cash stops coming and who wants that?
certainly not the leaders padding their palaces.

I'll get flamed for this, but considering the US history and dealings with Haiti it's hard to swallow all the righteous indignation that a lot of individuals have towards what people are doing for Haiti. My country's no better, and I'm all for helping them out as much as possible, but a lot of the responsibility for the state of Haiti's economy, and the weakness of their infrastructure, has a great deal to do with us, so I'd be jumping off any high horses just as soon as possible and just look towards helping our fellow humans.

No flaming from me, Shadowman. Look at what's happened and is still happening in the Haiti of the US, New Orleans. The solution is pretty much the same in both places--Bulldoze the sucker flat and start over...and that especially includes the economic and political infrastructure.

I just looked up the word 'idiot' in the dictionary, and Danny Glover's photo was there!

To reiterate --Yes, DG is a complete tool. But Haiti for the last couple of years has had the best President in its history who's actually tried to do something, anything about the institutiionalized top-to-bottom physical and spiritual corruption. On another note, check out these interactive maps of the earthquake and its devastating aftermath:
http://blogs.wsj.com/dispatch/2010/01/1 ... -of-damage And think on this: this 'quake was only 1/2 way up the light-to-violent scale. Think about an 8-8 1/2 earthquake there...or in Costa Rica or in California.
