My 3 buddies and I are coming over to San Jose for first time from Jan 30 to Feb 6th. Idea is to play golf in the morning and interact with the ladies afterwards – in short Tiger Wood life style on a budget.
Our first choice was SL Mansion rooms but they were booked so we looked at Hotel President and were told they have rooms available. We bought the airline tickets and when we called President to confirm the rooms , we were told they are full now. So we are in a bind now as the tickets are non refundable and we still have no confirmed place to stay.

We are looking for 4 single rooms, Hotel President level quality rooms, chica friendly and close to the hot spots, costing aprox 100 a night per room
We looked at Sleep Inn but the non smoking rooms and $25 guest fee was a deal breaker.
Appreciate all help from all the San Jose veterans on this board to guide us for a good alternate .

Room inventory might be a bit tight for your dates as this is high season & the end of your week is super bowl weekend which is a big mongering weekend in San Jose.

I would try:

1) La Amistad
2) Dunn Inn
3) Amon Plaza

All in Barrio Amon, reasonably priced, decent rooms & chica friendly

Two more possibles (both CRT Sponsors) are the Hotel Hemingway and the Hotel Tiquicia. They may be lower quality than you're looking for but any port in a storm... BTW, the other great sausagefest is Labor Day weekend. Damn shame El Prez treated you so shabbily.

Try La Amistad first, then the Clarion Amon Plaza. If they are a no-go, also check out Hotel Little Havana. The suites are way above your price range but you can split the costs by doubling up; the new smaller rooms are just as nice as in some other hotels (though lacking windows).

How do you come to that conclusion? Any business that sells a perishable commodity like an airline seat or hotel room will not hold it for you without a deposit.

No doubt when Jack Barr contacted the Presidente they had space available and in the period between that conversation and his attempt to book the rooms they sold out. From his narrative we do not know the time frame for all this.

The prudent way to handle the situation is to make a deposit to hold the room then quickly try to secure an airline reservation and you are good to go. If for some reason you can not coordinate everything within a reasonable time frame you cancel your hotel reservation within the free cancellation period.

I disagree that the Presidente treated him badly.

On the El Prez badly/ not badly thing, let's call it inconclusive absent all the facts. I do heartily agree with Brother ID's idea on sequencing the trip reservations.
Another option though sub-optimal would be to book a non-Gulch hotel (non-Chica friendly) and either go with the Chica to a short-term motel (Asia, La Oficina) or book a room at, say, Marruecos just as a sexplace.

The Europa doesn't get much press here, but I stayed there a few years ago at a time hotel rooms were not to be found anywhere in SJO. They were chica friendly (I don't know if this has changed), and not really expensive. Also, they were close to a lot of the action downtown.

Thanks everyone for all your responses.
For the time being we have managed to get smoking rooms in Sleep Inn and have made our reservation.
Plan is to reach San Jose, check the options available (better if we can visit the hotels you all recommended and see it for our self) and move from Sleep Inn to something we like as we are there for 7 days.
We look forward to meeting with all the great contributors of this forum as it has been so helpful planning our trip based on the advice here.

One quick thing - does anyone have recommendation of a good driver who can take us to and fro to Valle De Sol golf course every day or should we just take a cab?

As excellent as that Driver's list is, it might not benefit you to go earlier than page 7--at least one highly-praised driver--Mente--no longer does business here. If all else fails, try the van driver your hotel doubtless has...but I'd say go to the list of indie's first. Please remember that his lunch/dinner and MAYBE a propina is sort of expected--and if he's with you overnight, his hotel room>>still inexpensive in real-world terms. How much for example would the same journey from NYC up the Hudson River Valley or maybe SF to Napa Valley run you? Dig it.
