Fellas: I will be coming down on Saturday for a few days via Continental. Has anyone flown back to the U.S. after 01 Jan via Continental? Are they enforcing the bonehead rules of not getting out of one's seat during the final hour...etc.?

Thanks,
CH

From everything I have read there is no mandate on most of the stuff. The airline or even the captain of the flight decide on getting out of your seat, having access to the overhead bin, having something on your lap, being allowed to have a bag under the seat in front of you, etc.

A real knee jerk reaction to an isolated incident. Just like having to take your shoes off at the security check point.

Flying Delta to SJO in a couple of weeks from the epicenter of the shit-storm (Detroit). Will advise what it's like when I get to SJ. Westjet (a Canadian discount carrier that flies to the US & parts of Latin America) was saying carryon luggage would not be allowed on their flights. Seems kind of extreme to me...was looking at booking them to Puerta Plata in April, hopefully that'll be over with by then.

That's a Transport Canada law, not an airline policy. Whoever the dip-shit in charge is didn't want to deal with the U.S pressure so he just eliminated any baggage in the cabin entirely.

They were showing people at the airport who were trying to get their girl-bag/purse things through security and they flat out would not let the big ones on regardless of what they tried. Had to check them in.

Stupid if you ask me. I had to change flights because I wouldn't be able to make my connections (I normally only have carry on's), and got dinged for the change fee. They didn't see the logic in my explanation that they should waive the fee

I'm still waiting for the first person to piss themselves and all hell breaks loose about human rights yada yada

You're right. My boss is going to FLA in a couple of weeks & is pissed over this! He showed me the Transport Canada link. It's not going to be a factor for me going to SJO because I'm flying out of Detroit, but can anyone tell me if carryon bags aren't being allowed at departure from SJO to a US destination?

As far as I know the no carry on rule is a Canada only thing at this juncture. Most other countries have severely loosened things up since the XMAS debacle.

I've been following the topic quite closely on FlyerTalk, as some of them guys seem very up-to-date and in the know on current policy. First the suggested date the rule would be lifted was January 4th, then January 7th, and now everyone is just puzzled. Most of them have stopped giving input. Doesn't look good

Four words:

You're an unbelievable ass.

Nope, I was wrong, I've got a few more words. As much as I disagree with this stupid, stupid policy, the bottom line is that after 9/11, there were many false stories disseminated about the terrorists coming into the US from Canada. Even after it was proved that these were false, the media still blamed Canada for letting the terrorists across the border in a rampant act of NIMBYism that still boggles the mind. You think that even though it's not true that the terrorists entered the US from Canada that we're going to allow that kind of slander to happen again? I really suspect that this is what's behind this ridiculous reaction on the part of the Canadian government.

The fact is,
your country, ie the US, over successive administrations, laid the groundwork for the terrorist acts committed on 9/11 as well as before & after that date. That doesn't mean the US deserved it or that it's warranted, but there's a reason these terrorists are targeting your country. Your post tells me that while you're happy ragging on others, you don't have the courage to dissect your own country's shortcomings with any sort of objectivity.

It's this attitude, specifically that many Americans can't believe that other people can love their countries as much as you love yours, that will ensure that guys will risk blowing off their nutsacks just to blow up one of your planes.

Oh stop it...you're making a fool of yourself. The only good things to come from Canada are Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, SCTV and the rock band April Wine. I spent the first 20 years of my life four miles from the Canadian border, so don't talk to me about Customs. We used to walk across the border and back on a regular basis. Every weekend we would go across the border to bars in Canada. I've known a couple families who got wealthy from bring liquor across the border, with the 'aid' of both Canadian and American customs officials. They would time the crossings to coincide when their 'friends' were working Customs. Money talks. I've had several friends who were Customs officials on both sides of the border.
Hell, I was raised on Molson, Labatts ('50', many years before 'Blue' came out) and Okeefe beer. Thirty-five or so years ago there used to be a beer called Brador, made by Molsen. Its alcohol content was about 6%, double that of 'regular' beer. Apparently it is still made, with a silver label. When it first came out in the early-seventies, it had a black label.

I flew in from Chicago on Mexicana...and it was a breeze. Confusing. Website said, 1 carryon, checked via chat and 1 carryon 1 personal ok, at gate announced 1 carryon, nervous, but seems that some people take the big bags as carryon, so they collected these and checked them in.

I travel with the standard plus medical device. No one ever questioned or stopped me. In Mexico City, I filled up on the 5 bottles of ridiculously cheap alcohol and carried on. They found room.

All in all, I liked flying from an international terminal because it is less congested, mexicana fed me on both segments, I received free alcohol for an economy seat ($200.00!!!); and I the scores of duty-free stores. ($90.00 for Bushnells 2; Crown Royal and Guatemalan rum all 1 liter bottles)

The only drawback was trucking all the way through immigration then back to the same gate that I arrived, which of course, was at the end of the concourse.

The trek was made longer because there are duty-free shops between each gate!!!
