Actually, I've stayed in even cheaper hole-in-the-wall places than the Nuevo Johnson and bet you didn't think that was even possible. Sometimes I'm a cheap ass (culo barato) but usually I stay a little more upscale than that (with the Castillo and the Doral being the most common). I usually only stay at the NJ to shave some dollars off of my required travel budget when I plan on catching an early bus out the next morning and don't plan on bringing any chicas back to my hotel.

Another thing that some of you don't realize about me is that I'm not the same hard-core mongerer that most of the rest of you are. When I tell my friends and family back home that I travel to CR mostly to explore the country, I'm not completely lying. I usually spend at least half my time outside of SJ if not much more than that and see the mongering I squeeze in as just a nice little side benefit. I know, I know, heresy!

Ran into a Canadian the last couple of times in SJO. He was staying 6 - 8 weeks & had negotiated a $43 per night rate at the Amistad. IMHO a very good choice.

Pense lo mismo! I think "tacaño" is often used more often as "stingy, " than cheap, which would apply. Softer and with a slighly sarcastic edge could be "soy muy economico."
