How much should the cab fare be (roughly) from the airport to Dunn Inn? My wife and i will be there mid january. I have heard horror stories about the cab drivers ripping "newbies off", anybody have names and numbers of reliable drivers? Keep in mind my wife is colombian and speaks excellent espanol

thanks in advance

Tony

After you go through immigration, baggage, and customs there will be a little taxi booth/window next to all the rental car companies (before you leave the airport). You will prepay there and give the receipt to one of the taxi drivers waiting at the exit. Shouldn't be more than $25, probably around $20.

Last week it was $22 to La Amistad in the Orange cab. Month previous it was $18.

The prices at the taxi booth have been going up and up. Last Sunday they quoted me $26 to town. The week before $23, a couple of months ago they quoted $18. As usual I offer them $20, and they say no. Hey I tried. I laugh at them and say see ya. I then go upstairs take care of business (exchange money, pay departure tax) When I come out and hail the first red taxi I see and offer them $20 to take me into town. As always they Sí, señor and off we go.

http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr This is a much cheaper way to go and folks say they have no problems. They need 48 hours notice or more. I will try them in the future, didn't have enough notice this past trip.

I have taken the shuttle bus. At night, it is great bcs I was the only passenger. During the day, I would imagine a few more people which means some stops before those that stay at SL/LA. But $10 gauranteed so for those with a budget, it knocks $10 off the upstairs taxi.

Simpler, they may just want men to think they are as perfect as they want to appear to them, trying to hide what they consider to be the ugly truth about themselves. And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

I have only had to share an Interbus van once.
Two youngish gringa ecotourists. Must have been on the same flight because we didn'thave to wait long. Mine was the first stop so the ride took no more time than usual.

I have used http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr some 14 times in the past 14 months or so. There has never been a single hitch: Always there at the airport to fetch me; and always at the hotel at 4:30am to take me back. 4:30am mind you. That's service. I have no idea how Interbus (that is the carrier http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr contracts) gets this done....and don't care. Well....thinking about it....Interbus is more than simply airport transportation......

Anyway....topping all that off, Interbus via http://www.shuttlebus.co.cr is a top notch, honest service. As I was entering the Interbus van to leave the airport I walked away from my briefcase which holds my laptop and on the particular trip in mind, a good sum of cash money. Just walked away from it. I have no excuse. The young man who had been holding the sign chased the van to give me that satchel. "Good God!!!" I say to myself. I gave that guy $100.00 right on the spot. I gave the driver $50.00 after he dropped me off. Pardon me for breaking my own rule in not tipping (NOBODY).....than again that was more for services rendered. Very fine operation is all I have to say.

Do yourself a favor and skip the taxi if you are staying downtown. After exiting the airport make a left and walk down to the street.

Pay 420 colones ( 75 cents ) and take the bus to downtown San Jose. You can then catch a cab to any hotel in the area for maybe 1 or 2 mil colones.

The busses come about every 5 or 10 minutes so it's quite simple to catch a bus to downtown San Jose from the Airport. You wil see other locals waiting on the street to catch the bus. The busses run back and forth from downtown San Jose to the Airport all day long.

And yes, it's very safe to take the bus. Keep the 20 dollars in your pocket and hop on the bus for 75 cents.

Most people are NOT AWARE that the bus is simple to take downtown. They aren't familiar with the area so they assume the only way of getting to downtown is by catching a taxi since 20 or 30 drivers are waiting outside the airport's exit to get your business. What the drivers do not tell you is the bus is 1/20 of the price just a hundred feet away from where they stand.

Sorry, but taking the bus is NOT for newbies, or for anyone carrying a lot of cash and two or three bags with them, which is what most guys do. The cost of a a taxi is small for the security and privacy that you get. Hell. most guys will be spending a lot of money on hookers, booze and food, so a taxi is nothing, why cut corners there?

I always take the bus if I am coming in the daytime. I never have over a carry on and it has never been a problem. Ask and make sure you are on the right bus . Say San Jose to the driver and if he says Si then climb aboard. No colones well all you have to do is go upstairs at the airport and pre pay your departure tax and ask for your change in colones. When you reach the bus station at the end of the bus ride walk 20 feet to a waiting cab and tell him your destination. I can afford a taxi but I am never in a huge hurry and like the bus. OK give it a try. Uncle H.

i also have noticed the airport taxi charging different prices in span of weeks recently. It went from $18-$23 in a matter of 2 weeks. I can't believe its up to $26 now. I do like the convenience of just using the orange taxis but now i may have to go upstairs and get a regular cab. I'll start boycotting the orange cabs.

Anyone thinks boycotting orange cabs will have a positive affect on pricing? Or will they raise it even more due to lack of business? we'll find out i suppose :?
