Yeah after what I can afford to pay for chicas I can pay the following:

$9 for a chicken sandwich (better be the best damn bird)
$3 for a bottle of water or
$6 for a Costa Rica pen (ain't no pura vida in that). 3 yrs. ago only $3. They must be needing to raise more money to pay for the rest of the airport expansion since most of it the dough already earmaked proly squandered away in bribes.

But why should I? These prices god-damn higher than any US airport I traveled thru lately. It is a diagrace but the "tourists" must pay these prices after being awed and ooohed over "pura vida".

Last week when I left you should have seen the number of people buying stuff in the gift shop  I looked at the price of some of the wooden stuff, it was double what you would pay in town at the mercado (sp)

it is crazy. Oh also I forgot to mention the $6 for a Cinnabon! :x

When I got on Spirit for $8 I got a can of coke, nice pretzel/nut mix and a muffin. A bargain compared to that airport for sure.

Fortunately I got good values on most everthing else down there.

If prices in US airports were even the same I wouldn't bitch so much.

Do you folks complain so much about overpriced food when you go to Disneyworld, a ball game or an amusement park in the States?

Not usually. Mostly just grumble about it.

Prices at those places and at airports around the world are high that is a given and to be expected. However, the prices at SJO are outrageous and far surpass most other airport I have ever been in.

The raw material might be a bit higher, if it is imported, but certainly not high enough to explain the pricing structure and is at least partially mitagated by lower labor costs. Many of the operators at SJO such as Papa Johns, Burger King, Cinnabon have retail outlets in San Jose and charge much less there then at SJO. Yes you expect the airport to be higher but not so egregiously higher as they are at SJO.

So I say bitch on because that is the only thing you can do about it other then not patronize them.

I agree 100% -- don't patronize them if you don't like the prices.

My original point was SJO airport is practicing captive audience economics, just like Disneyworld and other venues do. Where there is no competition allowed, business will charge all the traffic will bear, right? Our only alternative is not to buy.

I have gotten food only twice in my visits and both times when I recieve my total of $12 for food I look at the concessionare and say "that's it?"

Normally they get the joke and its a chuckle for both sides of the fence. Outside of that, everybody stop eating sofuckingmuch

Right? I don't think so. If the only factor at work here is captive audience economics (CAE) then SJO would not stand out head and shoulders above most other airports. I believe the primary reason is the concession fees that the airport operator charges the concessionaires forces them to charge such high prices.

Even in a CAE environment there is a price point where enough of your potential customers will not buy rather then pay the asking price that your sales will be less then optimum and your profits will also not reach there full potential.

I avoid buying food at the airport. I usually have breakfast at Denny's before I drop off my car or pack a sandwich from one of the local sodas. There is no reason to pay those kind of prices!

Denny's is not much of an improvement on price. The upside is better and more food but they still kill you on price.
