Heading down to CR in January and thinking about going straight to Jaco from what i have heard. Is that a real first timer spot and what are some affordable and nice hotels that let you bring guests back? Thanks, all input is greatly appreciated.

Not too many bargains in January, but with the past year's economy you never know. Maybe try the Cocal. They allow chicas and during busy times have chicas around the pool.

You can also try Hotel Poseidon, Jaco. They have a web site. Not too far from the BB and walking distance to restrauants, beach, bank, internet cafe.

As I am rolling in a group and some people want the whole beach feel as well that is why we were thinking Jaco. Are there any disadvantages of going to Jaco as opposed to SJ?

The beach in Jaco is not much to look at... it's crappy and dirty. There are nicer beaches further south in Quepos/Manuel Antonio. The only reason I ever go to Jaco is to fish for a day, and spend two nights fishing for chicas in the Beatle Bar. I haven't stayed in Jaco for over 2 years, and not even sure what the scene is in BB anymore.

Don't worry, will be plenty of chicas in January... haha Interesting perceptions from vacationers who spend 75% of vacation time in the pit/ gulch. There are problems here for sure, but not the bleak, dirty depression of the gulch.

I would say Jaco over San Jose just to be out of that city. SJ for me is hard to warm up to. A second vote for hotel Poseidon as a place to stay. Jaco was built from the ground up on debauchery. Nice town really...

Here's the 2 hotels Websites mentioned plus a third option:
www.hotel-poseidon.com
www.hotelcocalandcasino.com
Also look at Clarita's Beach Hotel:
www.claritashotel.com

There's a disco on the second floor of a mall downtown, a good sportsbar with pool tables (Jungle Jim's), a couple of ATV companies, ziplines in the area, good restaurants...but it is true that the beach is for surfing (touch base with Thirdworld about that), not swimming...and if y'all are going to be there for a couple of days, a daytrip to Manual Antonio is no big thing.
For all this and more, use the "Search" function--there's tons of info here. And I know y'all are badasses but please be careful there.

Our group of misfits have a 7 night routine we do every Feburary.

First 2 nigths in San Jose

3 Nights in Jaco

last 2 nights back to San Jose

Seems to work out well.

It's funny how we all generally are happy when first hit the Hot humid Jaco area.
Then after a few days we are so eager to get back to cooler less humid Central Valley.
