Taking the wife to CR in January, we want to experience some tica fun, she is a beautiful colombian and speaks excellent spanish. What is the best room downtown, don't need a suite but would for the right price. We want to stay close to the action as possible so we are considering DR but the rooms don't look that great. We are also considering the SL. If you were me what room would you reserve? Need some help from the CR veterans please.

I would suggest La Amistad. I'm sure SL is booked for January.

The suite at the Presidente is nice although reports say that they are trying to become more family oriented. Also the suites at the HLH are very nice.

Lots of opinions and suggestions in this thread regarding places to stay with the wifey:

Personally I wouldn't stay at the HDR if it was free. I'd only get a room there to party in and crash somewhere else.

The Freebird is one block away from the Del Rey. Very nice little hotel but the neighborhood is not too great.

I think if you are with your wife however cool she may be you should go to a hotel that is both chica friendly and eco-tourist friendly. These would be:
La Amistad, Hotel Dunn Inn and Hotel Castello.

At the Sportsman or Little Havana your wife will always face the possability of being propositioned by a monger who thinks she is one of the working girls.

This IMHO is the best choice till you have been there and seen how things are for yourself.
