I have taught in secondary Ed, and attended a recruiting session by the Army two years ago and this is what I learned about an all-volunteer army:

All 17 year old males must be contacted by a recruiter. Only 30% meet current day requirements to be able to serve (ANY chronic illness such as asthma is a deal-breaker.

The two recruiters came from different walks of life. One was a mechanic, and chose to go into the army for the professional opportunity. The other grew up on the mean streets of St Louis and found his niche (and escape from poverty) on assault squads in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Remember that a large chunk of our war effort is fought by National Guard units, and they usually aren't from the wrong side of the tracks.

And like Costa Rica, the military is a good way to escape the boredom and nannyism of the US

But, I would argue that even for those that are unfit for armed combat, there should be a mandatory national service for every swinging dick from sea to shining sea,


let them sweep streets, pickup trash, whatever.

and a couple of months of boot camp to start.

and for those that can't seem to do that?

drop them from 15,000 feet over afganistan and western pakistan...places like that
