So the current fares from PHX to SJO on US Airways nonstop is $671, but from LAX with one stop in PHX is $409!! Here's my question: what happens if I book the flight and only show up in Phoenix airport for the second part of the itenerary? do they give away my seat because I didn't check in at LA airport for their final boarding call.?? does that void my ticket ? anybody else ever been in this spot ? I could just wait longer for more fare specials after the new year perhaps, but damn it's $262 less..for a ticket now.

A similar ploy is popular with experienced fliers. Many times, depending on where you are flying, if you want to go from A to B but you can find a cheaper fare from A to C with a stop in B, travelers would buy the cheaper fare, take only a carry-on and not fly the final leg from B to C. The airlines are savvy to this and will ban a passenger fot pulling this. If caught.
