To show how this current crisis is not just splitting family and splintering friendships among the peasantry, check this split between the 2 Honduran Ambassadors in the US (1 is UN, the other US), friends with each other and one of whom was a mentor to the other.

I say kudos to the Honduran army. This is what should have happened in Venezuela when Chavez starting messing around with the constitution. The only difference was that Chavez had the military on his side, a product of buying palaces for generals, condos in Miami for brass, pay raises for all. The Honduran army saw the slippery slope for what it was and acted upon it.
They should be commended by the US and the world.

BTW, anyone remember our failed, er, botched coupe backing in Venezuela?

Here's an editorial on why the Establishment in Honduras was so right in what they did. Also has a little recent perspective on the Region:

Now we may have some closure on Honduras' recent political convulsions--the election is over and (to my mind) the right man was picked--a conservative. If it had been the Junta's candidate there would be no coalescing, no healing. Still up in the air is Brazil's and Argentina's reaction--they bet the ranch on Sr. Zelaya being returned to power and against the Junta--what are they gonna do now that both were losing propositions?
First up, a news report, then some commentary (I don't agree with Ms. O'Grady all that often but she's got it right here):

Interesting. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Wonder what the next 100 years will bring.
