Okay, here are some facts. The guy who was with the girl in question, I believe her name is Carla, or something similar, was held for 12 hours, cuffed, fingerprinted and has to check in each month to prove he hasn't left the country. He has not been charged YET and probably will not be, but he can not leave the country (legally). This is fact. While he was going through the process, his lawyer (he is lucky enough to have had one on his cell phone) told him the girl was 16, and had a lot of problems at home, being molested etc. I don't know what the lawyer based those statements on, but the girl made an official statement and signed it. Maybe her age was in the statement, maybe not.

My friend was not charged because he had not gotten around to doing anything with the girl YET. This was in the girl's statement as well (according to the lawyer) and was the basis of his not being charged (according to the lawyer).

I may be able to look at a copy of the girl's statement to the police. If so I will have more to add. One last thing, the 911 call was from one of the girls working there and was specifically about und***ge girls working there. Once again, this is according to the lawyer.

The manager who was on duty when the shit hit the fan may have been fired, but I can only say he was not on duty when a different friend visited the place, the one that saw 'Carla' there and even took a picture to confirm.

If I get to read any of the official documents I will post what I can gather from them.

Even if the lawyer is mistaken in saying the girl was 16, and was wrong on the cause of the bust, my friend still spent 12 hours in jail and has to check in with the police every month for 3 months and can not leave the country. Facts. If that wouldn't bother you then maybe you have nothing to worry about.

Xman, I don't know what you are reading, but it seems like you did not read my follow up post, or choose to disbelieve everything in it. I know for a fact that my friend spent 12 hours in jail and can not leave the country for 2 more months. I believe my friend's account of what the lawyer told him. If you can see some reason for him to lie about this, or for the lawyer to lie, please share.

If you want to believe you are safe because the MPs would never let an und***ge girl work for them, I hope you are never proven wrong the hard way.

I have lived with Ticos in Tico neighborhoods and have yet to fully understand the attitudes. I have Ticos who wrote a denuncia on a gringo who was bringing 14 yr olds (in their opinion) into his house (not a legal denuncia, but a letter to the police). I have been propositioned by 14 yr olds on more than one ocasion that they liked, "hombres maduros" who were daughters of acquiantences, and a tico I know picked up the daughter of a friend at a rollerskating rink party and did the deed. I was with him when she prepositioned him, and she was very determined.

In the rural areas, you can unofficially have a 15 or older wife if her family approves. The few gringos who have this situation are living in the area, provide for the family or at least she and the baby, and do not treat them as call girls. Less than 50 years ago it was not uncommon that 14 year olds married and had a Ch*ld.

All I know is that all temptations I can resist, but sexual temptation, well, I have to run like hell to resist it.

Okay, here is one more piece of FACT. My friend, whom I have talked about in this post, went down to the court with his lawyer to 'check in' and prove he hadn't left the country. The lawyer asked for the file to be pulled, and they (the authorities) pulled the file. My friend and his lawyer looked at the girl's sworn statement. Her birthday was listed as September 8, 1993. Do the math, guys.

And yes, he is positive the same girl was working there again. If anyone wants to doubt his story, there is nothing more to add.

MH, don't be so quick to dismiss Wiki. The age of consent in CR IS 15 HOWEVER it is not quite as simple as that. It really all depends on a number of things, such as whether the chica in question happens to be a relative or not, is mentally incapacitated, or is "honest" or "corrupt", etc. However, the issue that is usually most relevant to us as mongers is whether we are PAYING for it or not. Despite the widespread misconception that there are no laws against prostitution in CR, there is an 18 y.o. age limitation for that. So while you (or at least any tico) can legally have sex with any consenting (non-relative) tica 15 or older FOR FREE, we aren't allowed to have P4P sex with any chica under 18.

Here are some relevant portions of the CR Penal Code as quoted by [url]http://www.ageofconsent.com/costarica.htm]www.ageofconsent.com[/url]I find that last part of article 167 to be particularly interesting. If I understand it correctly, it is only legal to have consenting (non-P4P) sex with a (non-relative) chica who is only 15 as long as she is already "corrupt". Apparently, after she turns 16 it doesn't matter whether someone else has already "corrupted" her or not. But then how many chicas in CR make it to 16 without already being "corrupted"? My guess is not many these days.
