I feel like a total ass, but I have to ask for some help. I will be traveling to Panama for business over Thanksgiving weekend, and have an opportunity to spend the days leading up in SJO. Specifically, Nov. 22 – 26 is a possibility at the moment.

I am a very experienced monger. I’ve been to SJO about a dozen times, but it’s been 7 years since my last visit. I’ve been to Colombia, Panama, Brasil, Germany, China, Thailand…blah blah blah, I’m not a newbie but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to SJO. So I will read the forum as much as possible, but I’m pressed for time and could use a summary/quick response.

My questions, if one or several of you gentlemen can have mercy on me for asking things that have undoubtedly been previously asked, are:

1. Might I find a decent place to stay with so little advanced warning? I will absolutely require reliable wi-fi within my room (gotta work some), and am not interested in paying a guest fee. A king-sized bed is highly preferable as well. I’ll pay a fair sum for a quality room, but the guest fee just bugs me!
2. The Sportsmans lounge sounds like it will fit the bill – what is the best way to make a reservation?
3. If SL is not available, where else might I look? And again, what is the best way to make a reliable reservation?

Back in the day, it was all about Hotel Presidente, Arte y Sauna, Club Idem, the Park Hotel (crazy Bill, his wild shows and $20 viagra tablets), the Molino Rojo (VIPS #2), and of course the Blue Marlin. It will be a fun time to see what is still there and what has changed. I’d appreciate if someone can give me a quick summary & advice on how to organize accommodations quickly. If I can’t do it in the next 12 – 16 hours, I’ll need to purchase my ticket direct to Panama and forego CR.

Thanks gents,

Quagmire (a.k.a. La Muerte on other boards)

Any of the above hotel should be able to accommodate your needs. Also try Hotel M @ http://www.hotelmcostarica.com/

You mentioned price was not the first concern. I agree with all of the above. And would say Hotel M is about 200.00 a night with the beds and tubs. They have eat in on the high side or you can eat out and take back.

Some more specifics about Wifi:

In Hotel M, try to get a room on the 2nd floor; the wifi access points there seem to be more reliable than the one(s) downstairs.

In SL, try for a Mansion room -- the Mansion area has its own dedicated wifi router.

For Sunday - Thursday you might be able to get rooms at any of the three places due to cancellations and because it's midweek.

I would call Manfred, Susan or Yency at SL, Matt, Carlos or Rodolfo at Amistad, or Scott or Ivan at Hotel M and speak to them directly instead of trying to go through their websites' reservation systems.

Good luck,

mh

Gents, thank you for the replies and the help. I got a very quick and friendly response from Yency at the SL, and without much hassle I was able to make a reservation for my stay. It sounds like a good place, and it will be fun to re-acquaint myself with a city I once knew very well.

I'll read through the forum over the next couple of days and develop a game plan. Thanks again.

if you join full membership, you not only get discounts to a lot of places, like the SL, but also can then see all the maps and chica pics.

well worth the price when considering all the time and money already invested in a trip.

even a cheapskate like me saw the value in joining.

wait'll you see the Tico MP's and other joints on the maps.
