quote="Thirdworld"]Yep, the best advice that has been given is not to carry anything illegal and just keep the answers simple. On vacation. "what did you do", just relaxed and enjoyed the city. If they ask where you stayed tell them. The big thing to remember is not to get flustered. If you have nothing illegal with you, you have broken no law. Nothing they can do. Well, they can delay you long enough to miss a flight I guess. Don't know, even though I go back and forth, never get many questions.[/quote]
Some how, my friend who lives in C.R. was placed on a "list" we only summized its was because he travelled alone and made so many trips.
ICE searched his laptop, dumped his clothes out each time and detained him the first time for almost 8 hours, the 2 subsequent times were for about 4hrs each. This guy almost 60, served in the Army , decorated, had a top secret clearance, never carried anything illegal. Only after he started demanding to see a supevisor did they let go on. This was at Miami.
After the third time he hired an attorney who then filled some DHLS forms? and wrote a scathing letter to DHLS and CC it to his Senators and House Rep and the US A.G.
Yep,,, they can delay you, basically F*** with you all they want.
Now he gets the standard questions, and then on his way.

I have been stoped leaving and returning. I have brought medicine back and sometimes they want to look and other times not. There has never been any reason to worry as I have not done anything illeagal. Now when I was leaving all I would tell the guy is I am going to party. He had to live with that. I am not surrendering my rights to know one. On returning I try to answer all questions the best I can. It has always worked out for me. I am an x-con. And that has never been mentioned leaving or entering. And does not in itself seem to provoke questions.

The britt's pulled me to the side in London and wanted to know if I was Irish years ago. And why I had a basic Text. Told them I was an addict in recovery and they told me to move on.

I signed up and paid for the Global Entry program with Immigration and Customs. I got to use it for the first time a few weeks ago at IAH when returning from SJO. What a piece of cake! There were two kiosks and no line to use them. There was one agent watching over the kiosks. When I approached I told him it was my first time using the machine. I followed the instructions and had no problem. I took the receipt from the machine and was on my way to baggage claim in about 2 minutes. Handed the receipt to the Customs agent on my way out of the Customs hall and I was on my way to my connecting flight.

If you travel often I would recommend siging up. It is a way to be screened as a trusted traveler and it will filter out a lot of the BS that we usually have to put with. Just do not even consider doing anything illegal as they will come down on you with both feet!

BYW: I haven't seen the "extra" Customs agents in the corridor at IAH checking passports like there were last year. I don't see what it was buying them. Maybe they didn't either.

Well, I have been red flagged.

What do you guys answer when asked "what were you doing in xxx?" and have you been caught with tools of the mongering trade?

I tell them that I am on vacation, and have the means to travel. Also, I take lots of pictures of churches, so after viewing 80 or so they tend to let me go. Next, I fill out a comment card. When a manager calls, I tell them that they are wasting their time, because I will never reveal the name of the ICE agent's wife that I Phuck on my trips. :)

They have not stopped me since.

The last time I returned to the US a few weeks ago the young female agent asked me what I was doing in CR and I simply said that I was there enjoying the Costa Rican women. She just looked up, smiled and stamped my docs. So much for making up lies.

Same here. I tell them chasing senoritas and I have the hotel card in hand and I offer it. I believe the content, no jiz left in my system look seals the deal (it is in the eyes). Never a problem, yet.

My same line....."chasing chicas"  The guys laugh and the last female officer, looked at me real serious and up and down with a quizzical look, then put her arm on my back, laughed and said, "get outa here."

PURA VIDA!

PS I love a certain CR Customs official when leaving SJO. One day, I'll muster the moxie to ask her out.

I am with Western:

Used the Global Entry Kiosks Twice now What a breeze through Imigration and Customs with carry on in less the 3 minutes at MIA.

The lines on my 1 return at MIA were at least an hour long and forget about Fort Lauderdale if you come in behind the Air Jamaica flight when returning from CR..

Simply stated for anyone who travels Internationally a few times a year its well worth the application & cost (For 5 Years).

Also a Global Entry program member, At Fort Lauderdale from plane to curb side took about 5 minutes. Well worth the expense.

With your luck Brother Orange, she'd call over her gay male colleague to do the frisk. Ho ho.

Fellows spend a extra $100.00 and get on their frequent flyer list. They do a back ground check on you put a little sticker in your passport which identify you. When you come home from a trip you use the same machine that the pilots and air hostesses use. The machine gives you a little sticker. All you do is hold it up and walk thru immigration and custom. I have it and it work. No one ask me any question where I am coming from. Just a welcome home and have a safe drive home. That’s all I get. Plus no waiting in line..

I just say " seeing a girlfriend" and thats it. 21 times through customs and not one stop, one asked where she lived and that was the toughest it got. Damn now we are all going to be saying the same thing just killed my secret. I think chasing chicas would probably work as well...they really dont care about that at all its human.. what they care about is how you respond to the questions and if you look like you have something to hide. So if you feel guilty about mongering and the toys in your bag then you have a higher probability of being pulled to the side, but you havent done anything wrong so relax

Santa’s Bro, great to read you again. Hope all is well with you my friend. I agree that you always tell the truth, don’t carry illegal stuff and don’t try to be friends. They are not your friends and don’t want to be your friend. They want scalps.

One time I took some Turrialba cheese back for my son in California. Got to IAH, picked up my bag and as I was proceeding to the little check-out booth an agent came over and said that I was randomly selected for a secondary screening. “Randomly selected! don’t Bull Sh*t me! You saw some cheese wrapped in aluminum foil on your X-rays. It is legal to carry cheese back into the U.S.”

He had no sense of humor and didn’t particularly like it that I knew he was full of it and he liked it less that I told him he was full of it. But he won! He screwed with me for a long time. Nearly missed my flight.

I wound up re-packing my entire bag all over again because everything was taken out and examined. Moral of the story, keep my mouth shut, do not volunteer anything. Simple straight forward polite answers. Let me tell myself again -- KEEP MY MOUTH SHUT!
