Before my magicjack I'd buy the ICE cards from the front desk of the hotel for 3000c, also sold at stores, farmacias etc.

Same here. The ICE card works fine, and if you only need to check voicemails once per day, it's all you're gonna need.

Enjoy your trip BigJTC and don't sweat the small stuff!

Make sure you get one that says 199 on it, it's for international calls. Don't get the 197 cards, they are for local calls only.

It may be worth your while to look into the MagicJack Brother Paco Loco mentioned. Those that have one love it. Widely available (even RiteAid in NJ sells it) and not just for trips either. Works with nearly any handset which you can pick up off eBay cheaply. Search here for further info or:

I was thinking the same thing, as I absolutely love my Magic Jack. But he's heading to CR in one day, so I didn't think that would be a viable option to him. But for future trips, it's a no-brainer. IMO, there's so many inexpensive options on the market nowadays - that there's no reason to be paying ridiculous, over-inflated phone charges in CR. Just my dos cojones....

I used magic jack last time in CR and loved it. You can buy them at Walgreens and get them up and running immediately. All you need to do is find any computer with internet access and plug it in the usb port. Then plug in a phone. No worries on calling into the States from CR. I did buy some cheap cell phones to take with me this next trip just to be able to talk to the others going locally, but will have the magic jack with me as well.

Same here for MagicJack. Love to attend those business meetings while my chica is taking care of me. The number is local, very clear and stable. At the same time I use at home to make those cheap CR calls to the favoritas.

Here's what the calling cards look like (the pictures on the front vary):

If you carry around a laptop computer that has a microphone and speakers there is no need to buy any other hardware (MajicJack & a telephone handset) or pay a subscription fee for telephone service. There are any number of VOIP services that you can use for, at most, a small per minute charge. Skype is very popular as are Yahoo Instant Messenger and Microsoft Instant Messenger. If your PC doesn't already have one of these preloaded on it you can download the software for free.
