I have stayed at the Johnson for the last three years. hotel is safe--people at front desk and maids are wonderfull--once they know you(at least for me)--there was no charge for bringing chicas to room. There was also a great place for breakfast a half a block away. Bottom line you can't beat a clean, maybe not so quiet, rooms with cable for $10 a night. --getting out of the gulch is not a bad thing. My Spanish is minimal but people will work with you--of course at night take a taxi

I will likely stay there again as the price certainly is good.I go to bed late and wake up before very late so the noise didn't turn out to be a big problem for me.The rooms on the 3rd floor are a bit rough.Thats where i was the first 2 nights.It is quiter up there as there were hardly any people up there.I moved down to the second floor and the room was somewhat better.It is a good area to really immerse your self in the common peoples culture in Costa Rica.Experiencing the culrure is a big part of the travel experience for me.I discover an outstanding roasted chicken place about a block and a half South where you could get a half Chicken for 800 or 900col.They also had numerous local full meals for around 1000 to 1100 col. a great value for local food .It was a freindly clean place.rbc100

Hello, How were things at your room in the Hotel Nuevo Johnson for your recent trip?

I will be making my 2nd trip to CR in mid Feburary, and need to find a place to stay that will not run me $ 50.00 a night (like the first trip).
I had a great hotel, on 1 st trip in Nov., but that $50.00 a day really eats up your budget quickly.

Was the Johnson Hotel OK? And I know the price is around $ 10.00 a night, so I am not expecting the "Holiday Inn" or the "Presidente" for that budget price. Thanks, Steve

I will be staying at the Hotel (Nuevo) Johnson in February. I will give an update when I get back! Saving $65 (Del Rey) less $10 (Johnson) per night for a 4 night trip would mean $220 more for the ticas! Also, the $239 ($294 after taxes, Yahoo Travel fees, etc.) for air fare doesn't hurt either!
