Article on BCS Reform Proposals by Hokie Coach Frank Beamer

Hokies on the BCS

Virginia Tech will not play for the national championship this year, and it could be left out of the Bowl Championship Series picture altogether. On Tuesday, some coaches and players were asked to sound off about college football’s controversial system.

Coach Frank Beamer said he favors the "plus-one" model in which the winners of two BCS games would play for the national championship. He said he bought into that idea after the 2004 season, when the Hokies lost to an undefeated but uncrowned Auburn team in the Sugar Bowl. Undefeated Southern California won the BCS title by beating Oklahoma.

“Generally speaking, each year there are about four teams that are legitimate national champions,” Beamer said. “I think you take four bowls, and the two play the next week. You don’t miss any school time. It all makes sense.”

In May 2008, at a meeting of major college football’s top executives in Hollywood, Fla., the plus-one model was met by such strong opposition that the officials reportedly did not even take a vote to send the issue to the conference presidents for discussion. Commissioners Mike Slive of the Southeastern Conference and John Swofford of the Atlantic Coast Conference were the only ones who supported the system.

The BCS is likely to remain unchanged until at least January 2015, when the television contracts expire. Beamer called the BCS “a good system.”

“With everything involved there’s a pretty good shot you’re going to get the two best teams in the country,” Beamer said. “No system is perfect. We got what we got, and I think it’s good.”

Running back Ryan Williams said he wanted to see a playoff. Williams cited how some deserving teams are left out of the mix at the end of each season.

“There’s always big upsets throughout the whole year,” Williams said. “You never know who could beat who at a given time.”

With their fate out of their hands, the Hokies are hoping that one of those upsets happens to Georgia Tech so they can get back in the hunt for a BCS berth.

In order for Virginia Tech to win its third consecutive ACC title, and to earn the accompanying BCS berth, it needs to win out and to have the Yellow Jackets to lose to either Wake Forest on Nov. 7 or Duke on Nov. 14. Georgia Tech defeated Virginia Tech, 28-23, on Oct. 17 and thus owns the Coastal Division tiebreaker should both teams finish with the same conference record

Plus one works when the 4 teams are equal...ie: all 1 loss or all undefeated.

But what about when there are 2 undefeated a 1 loss and a 2 loss? We are giving the 2 loss team a shot? No way.

If it is not a full blown 8 team playoff tied to conference champs and at large bids, I'll keep what we got.

Playoff talk usually comes from teams that have just lost!!

A four team playoff would be great. It would only take a extra week and think of the extra money for the NCAA.
