Thought some of you might be interested in this information as published in the Ticotimes this week. You can view this whole article at http://www.ticotimes.net/weekend.htm , but the next 2 months are probably the best climate wise if you want to explore outside of San Jose. Think Cuauhita is one of the better destinations over there for beach and fun.

Ask any local on the Caribbean coast what time of year it is right now, and they will tell you it's summer. Now you can find the easiest possible ocean dive conditions in the inner reef's tranquil waters. That's because the driest months of the year on the south Caribbean coast are normally September and October. The brown rivers drop to their lowest flows, leaving the ocean water clear blue.

For most of the rest of Costa Rica, including the Pacific coast, somewhere around 40 percent of the year's rain falls in these two months.

The rains usually murk up Pacific coastal sites, but not offshore islands that are far enough away from the engorged rivers of the mainland. This is the case right now with Cocos and Caño Island National Parks. When strong blue-water currents from offshore wash the parks, the runoff from the island's streams is quickly washed away.

Another reminder of the great differences in climate between the coasts, and between them and the Central Valley. If only there were more P4P on the Caribbean side...but maybe part of its charm is that there isn't.

I was in the area between Playa Bonita and Chahuita earlier this week. Very nice and fun. It may be a year before can get a ceviche and pargo meal on the beach to equal the beach front lunches there.

I met a couple of cute very friendly ticas, but had no time to make time. But, as others have said, take your playmate with you.

PS: Limon is still worth avoiding.

Its a helluva time to be bumping this thread. September and October may be dry months for the southern Caribbean coast while the rest of CR is drowning in rain, but we're now heading into November and December which is their PEAK rainy months while everywhere else in CR the rainy season is finally starting to taper off. If any of you guys were thinking of paying this part of CR a visit sometime during the next couple of months, you're probably better off saving that for some later trip.

..Unless of course you're from the Great NorthWest and need that touch of home (albeit a warmer version). Coffee here, coffee there--what's the diff?
