Please don't take this the wrong way - I have been slapping myself in the head over this post and some of the comments wondering why. I would never discourage anyone from doing what they want and living a dream but I would caution you to think about what you really want out of your trip.

It seems like you have a couple agendas and you need to focus on what you really want. Do you want to go visit a country and hook up with girls? Do you want to backpack across a country and see the sites? Are you looking for a combination? If you want both then IMO your budget is way low. I just got back from Colombia and blew your entire budget in a week but bear in mind that I stayed safe and in secure locations and saw a lot of sites and did a lot of girls.

I wouldn't go to Colombia for a backpacking excursion. Again, don't take that the wrong way but remember that Colombia has just recently opened up for tourists and if you get away from the big cities and into the mountains and jungles the scene can change quickly. It will be a MUCH different experience from just riding a bus or taxi in Mexico. Cancun is a tourist trap and a gringo is not placed in that much danger. It is an ENTIRELY different animal in other countries.

If you run into the ELN or some other group of militia in the mountains of Colombia you will be lucky to make out alive. They don't play around. Even though you are a big guy and pumped up with confidence that will make you a even bigger target because you will stand out. Have you ever seen the show locked up abroad? well that stuff is real. Now I'm not trying to scare you and can only give my opinion as someone who has traveled the world and seen a lot of stuff. I'm not an "old" guy but can think back of when I graduated college and how I thought I was bullet proof but thank god I didn't run off into the jungles of Colombia because I may not be here today. Just be safe is all I'm saying, especially if your Spanish is limited because alone in Colombia you WILL need more than limited Spanish that's a fact.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Colombia - the country is beautiful, the people are warm and the chicas are absolutely stunning. However my experience and what you are proposing are two completely different things.

IMHO what I would suggest to you is that if you want to do the backpacking thing and see the sights etc. and occasionally hook up with a chica, stay with your original plans of CR.

Head up to Jaco and do it with the other gringos that are there. CR is a little more easy to navigate and your limited Spanish will prove ok there. Hook up with someone else on a similar trek and travel together. Negotiate with the women or hit a MP for your fun. I personally still couldn't do it on your budget because as I've gotten older - staying in Hostels is not my thing. I did it in Europe for a while back in the day but then I got used to private bathrooms and waking up to hot chicas next to me and the whole P4P scene.

Again, don't think I'm discouraging you from living a dream. I just hate to see people run off and do something that might be life threatening without all the proper background of what they might encounter - even though you are a big guy and can probably take care of yourself remember this IS NOT Cancun.

Also, this is a P4P board (Pay for Play) ie puntas - so it may not be the best one for what you are looking for. However if this scene interest you then it IS going to be one of your best sources of information. We have a myriad of members that are very helpful and well versed on the scene all over the world.

So in summary, stick to CR if you want to backpack, see the sites and have a post college experience with a punta. If I can be of any help then please PM me and I'll try but above all else please be careful on your adventure.

Yes, I agree Colombia probably isn't the best choice, plus ive always dreamt of going to CR. However, Thailand looks amazing too, but airfare is what is discouraging me.

I kno this isn't going to be like Cancun, just showing that i have been to the US.. everyone was telling us not to go to mexico city too but we were fine.

To break it down, I want to hook up with girls, hit the beach daily to explore, hit the cheap sodas, and just experience the country. I have a feeling i won't have to pay for all my hookups, is this reasonable for a young good-looking guy (not trying to sound full of myself haha) or won't I be able to hook up on the cheap? maybe 20-30 usd? I have a feeling i am gonna get down there and change my itinerary from exploring CR to exploring women.. so I see what you mean about the budget.

Im thinking about staying in a different hostel every 7 days and just taking the bus to the next. which ones should I really look into? also what are the must see MP's?

Ok - now that your head is back in CR - assuming that you are going to be in Jaco or someplace else with a beach you may be able to get by on somewhat of a reduced budget. Know that the beach in Jaco though is sh*t so you may not want to swim around it unless you are up on your shots. Tambor and other places have really nice beaches to explore and you will just need to do research on costs, travel, etc.. CR can still be dangerous though so be careful.

I'm 38 but look like I'm in my mid to late 20's. I have no problem in finding chicas wherever in the world I'm at - but if you want freebies be prepared to put in some time and hone up on your Spanish even then there are no guarantees.

You might have better luck with a fellow backpacker. There is a post on here by a member that did just that - he hooked up with a gringa backpacker in Jaco for a night.

I can't speak for the Jaco scene of MP or Hostels because I haven't done any of them. In CR I prefer to hole up at the Amistad or SL in San Jose and do my work out of there. A room there will run you at minimum $50/night and that's with the CRT discount for a low end room. Not even sure if the SL has rooms that cheap. I usually spend on average $80/night for a room.

As far as the MP - in SJ you could hit the lower end MPs and get away with the $30 budget. I would try out Relax they are not that expensive and have a good rep on here. That will be really your only choice because I'm sure the Hostels are not chica friendly and you would have to get a ST room at a hotel if you wanted to keep a chica for any length of time.

If you go to San Jose at least walk through the DelRey it is an experience in itself especially for a newbie. Be warned though that any takeout from there will run you a lot more than the $30 unless you don't mind the dregs of the earth.

If you think your agenda might change from exploring CR to exploring the girls then I would suggest doing that extra work you don't want to do and saving up the extra $$. Shorten your trip - do a week or two of the cheap backpacking and see the sites, then splurge and spend a week in a hotel ie the SL or Amistad and bang away. Remember if you're unsure about this step you can go the SL and always find a willing wingman more than likely from this board that will be more than happy to show you the ropes of this lifestyle that we lead. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to VIP if you are considering this. The discounts alone will pay off big time - then read, read, read.

Be careful though if you are considering the P4P lifestyle as it is not for everyone -- it IS addictive and you won't ever be the same.

Thanks for all the tips, after visiting this site i'm wondering if I would have a better trip if I came for 14 days, and just lived well as opposed to roughing it for a month... I was looking at staying la Amistad for the first 7 days then busing it from SJ to Tamarindo or something for the last 7 days. I've done a lot of reading on this site so far, but still haven't pinpointed a good city to stay other than SJ. Jaco sounds ok, but the beach sounds shitty... I'd like to go somewhere by the beach, mountains, and ticas of course.. so many things to take into account because I want to do it right.

also, before you leave for CR, try to pick up some inexpensive trinkets for gifts as well as any brochures/articles about cures/treatments for the elderly. All the Little Darlings mums and other family members are ill. In particular, heart problems like double triple quadruple bypass surgery and stuff.
