I have been reading about some sort of Chinatown development or gentrification perhaps in San Jose.

Where is this location in relation to the gulch and do any of the members see any development/differences going on?

It appears the ChiCom's are using their new found wealth to spread their sphere of influence throughout Central and South America. They are making large investments infrastructure (new stadium in SJ). Much of this is done to to dissuade loyalty to Taiwan, a long time burr in the ChiCom's ass. Maybe I'm paranoid but I do feel discomfort with their "generosity".

It is in the area where Idem, Relax, Tin Jo restaurant, etc. are located.

Don't sweat it -dude. It's all just talk. Nothing is going to happen until someone steps forward to pay for it. In this case that someone will likely have to be China.

According to the newspapers, the plans are to build some Chineese style gates at the entrance to the area (like S.F., London and others) and to entice asian businesses like resturants, shops, Doctors, etc. to locate there. Much like other Chinatowns around the world.

?Claro?

Does this mean the new Chinatown barrio will have things like Car Thieves that can't drive?

I don't know about that but they will probably have something that other Chinatowns don't have... Columbian gangs!

Brother Western--I seriously doubt that. The Chinese triads who will inevitably be a part of any Chinese area will make those Colombianos look like the shot-term adolescent bumblers they are. Let those Colombianos pose a threat to the Chinese and see how long they exist.
And now a note about the term "ChiCom"--that was passe about 20 years ago. Mainland China went from Communist to a near approximation of Naziism nearly overnight. The PLA still controls a lot of the Chinese business but mostly it's rapacious capitalism with political, social and overall economic but not business control by the state--that's why the Yuan is so undervalued AND we get tons of rotten drywall and lead paint in the toys.

It has been funded. $1,000,000 from the Chinese government and $300,000 from the San Jose municipal government. Completion target date June 2010.

To back up JazzboCR , there has been some economic articles as to the extent the party controls the economy. ( NEW YORK TIMES, BARRONS, BLOOMBERG ). In one article the writer had the party with 60-70% ownership. But what is far more surprising is that the Party now owns more of the economy then before Timmerman square. Party membership is now considered the ticket to advancement and the Educated, businessmen are flocking to join. These groups used to be the first one’s the Party lined up and shot when ever the leader got bored.
The big investments made over seas and being done by Companies owed almost totally by the Party . The party went from using the stick to using the carrot ( and then the stick) to keep every one in line. The banking system is one of taking money from the workers and then loaning the money almost entirely to Party owned business.

However I have read some articles how when they do come in, the middle to small business men are less then happy and becoming resentful , as they are getting shut out of any of the advantages and in many cases losing business to the Parties Companies. Compared to how Americans did business we start to look the like the good guys again. American hired and bought as much locally as they could to cut cost, but it is to Chinas advantage to import every thing- ie the SJ soccer stadium. Americans never do it our self’s it we can hire some else.

Chine INC plays by a whole set of different business rules then we do. If this is not addressed and soon, the damage to American Business will continue to the point of not ever again being able to compete.

Not to be snarky Thirdworld but --if we're talking only about Chinatown, it's the triads; if they try to extend OC influence outside that area to SJO as a whole--my money's most def' on the Colombianos.

bet a bunch of the stadium workers don't go home and their families end up joining them.

Brother C'dude probably got it right--though many of the workers and families may not stay in CR but move on to the next big China Inc. project in Latin America. This is only the first big project--they'll use this tactic to extend their influence elsewhere in the region--a naval station somewhere maybe? Just speculation on that but China most def' wants a blue water navy and this region doesn't know enough about them to hate or fear China.
