Guns, pistols, assault weapons, etc. are all a part of Central American culture. They are akin to Cental American architectural styling which includes shards of glass embedded into the top of concrete walls as well as razor wire and concertina wire atop and circling pretty much anything and bars on the windows.

All of the above is cultural and has nothing to do with security as such.

at $10 bucks per day, those guys will cut and run without even thinking about your rich gringo ass. I spend in Honduras and the guns are actually a detriment to the guards, because the first thing the serious criminals do is ....wait for it....Shoot the guards!
