Dear Brothers:

This has been posted many times before, but as a friendly reminder here it goes again:

TICA does not mean "hooker". It means "woman of Costa Rican nationality".

CHICA is an code word we use around CRT for "hooker", at least among the monger milieu, but it doesn't mean "hooker" either -- it means "girl" or "chick".

So when you say "I went to such and such place and it was full of TICAS", you're not saying it was full of working girls, you're saying it was full of Costa Rican women.

Hope that helps,

mh

ETA: to add Pac's correction.

Interesting point and how ya doin', MH?

I don't think either is acceptable code for "hooker". If we mean that an establishment was full of working girls we should probably just say that the place was full of "working girls".

Getting ready to go play pool with you, Pac. ;)

You are so right about "chica", given it really means "girl", not "hooker".

I just see posters around here tossing around "ticas" when they are obviously referring to "working girls". A friendly warning before they commit a faux pas in San Jose.

The word for working girl is - PUTA. However, some guys on this board don't want to offend their princess(es) with such fowless. In reality, puta is used both literally and figuratively everyday in spanish.

Thanks for bringing this up - I get really aggravated when I hear guys referring to ticas as hookers. Or, chicas as hookers. It sounds soooooo ignorant and really flames - dumb gringo. "Hey Charley, lets go pickup some ticas at the Del Rey.".... For the record:

100% of the girls at the Del Rey are - PUTAS

99.9% are chicas - I assume some might be trannies... pretty sure some have crossed the line with surgery or have both. Who knows!!! I know for sure that a tranny snuck-in and never got caught several years back.

of the putas probably 25% are ticas... the rest are from _______ country in Latin America and some even from Europe

So, it is soo much more intelligent to hear "Hey Charley, lets go pickup some putas at the Del Rey." At least if locals speak english, they will think.... hmmmm they aren't all that ignorant.

While ticos us the word "puta" when referring to working girls, I found that the word most used when talking about girls IN and OUT of the gluch is "guila."
I heard this word alot while over there and it's all over the ticosexo website.

I don't like to use the work puta even when talking with guys only but sometimes it slips out.

Me neither. I avoid using that word. I don't like it, probably because where I come from it's used as an insult.

Puta is also used in spanish very commonly to mean bitch - which technically should be perra - but who am i to criticize. I have heard it all. Working girls often refer to other working girls as putas - but funnily enough I have never heard them refer to themselves as putas. Go figure - Just thought everyone deserved to hear my $.02

Ps. In polite company, it is better to avoid the use of Ticos, Ticas, Putas, Perras, Nicas, Nicos, Beaners, Colombianas, Colombianos, etc... as there is always a chance someone will perceive you as classist or racist. Just a thought. Around me and most of the CRT brothers, let it fly nobody cares.

'Puta' is not the word of choice among the girls themselves. I my hours of intimate discussions with them, they use the term 'prostitutas' almost exclusively. I have never heard one describe herself as a 'puta.'

Wrong!!!!!!

All you PUTOS are bitches. :P :P :P :P

I see where the non-Spanish speaker can get confuse between tica and chica but I do not see it as a prevalent error across the board. But WTF! Now we are offended by calling a chica a “chica”. I have seen it use on the Mexican forums like TJ Amigos and others. I like it. Is a more PC way than to use puta, which where I come from will get you cut in a second.

Get out there and hit some guys and quit over analyzing all these mundane, silly issues..... Chica a bad word, now I've heard it all.
