I might be a little confused by your question... but answering what I think you are asking:

I believe you are being charged for the glass bottles. If you were buying cans, please excuse my response and hopefully someone else can help you. If you purchase beer in the bottle, keep them and return to the store with the empty bottles and you can purchase new bottles cheaper.

For this same reason, it is a very good idea to give the bottle a good wipe with a napkin prior to drinking as well as a quick check for any chips or sharp edges.

It's 50 phucking colones. Are you being serious? People need to get over the "gringo prices" thing. I'll give ya 8 cents anytime you need it.

It is not a higher charge... it is the listed price. Look again and you should see the price listed correctly.

I own a bar and it is the same thing. On a daily basis I have to sign off on how many bottles are being returned. It adds up when you sell about 3,500 beers during a Costa Rican soccer game. It is also the reason why my security guards at the front door are charged with not letting a guest leave with a bottle and instead exchanging it for a plastic cup. The cups at least are free and provided by the brewery.

In my state they charge a 10 cent bottle return. The glass is recycled and less on the road. The price on the shelve never mentions the deposit. This is the same thing San Jose, we are talking 50 colones about a dime. This is not a gringo thing. Just a way to get the bottle back. If its a deal breaker buy cans.

Simpler, they may just want men to think they are as perfect as they want to appear to them, trying to hide what they consider to be the ugly truth about themselves. And I may be reading more into it than is there, but I do believe they consider the basis of the lies to be justified."

They've had the deposit for bottled beer since I lived here in 1995. I bought beer in bottles. I tried to return 10 and buy five. They would only refund 5 empties, the same number that I purchased. Consequently, I had a continuous collection of 10 that I left behind.

So I buy cans.

the trick is to carry your coin purse, like i do, in a pair of nasty skid marked drawers.

once they get a sight (wiff) of that, it is sometimes no charge!

last time i was in cr I stayed at freebird. I would walk to the semi big supermarket 2 or 3 blocks away, i think there was a bus station next to it. anyway when ever I would buy beer they would always charge me extra, like say it was 500c they would charge me 550c for a beer. they could see i was a gringo and could not speak spanish well, so what the hell could i have done. i mean its still cheaper than getting beer in a bar, but i just dont like getting takin' advantage of.
anyone have this happen to them or know what is going on?

OK, so that is the best possible explanation that you could come up with???
