Wonder if you can elicit the help of any hospital officials from the hospital down the street. Theyre not as close to the tracks, but aren't hospital streets supposed to be a quiet zone anyways /? just a thought..

good luck with it.

When I made my reservation with Matt, he said he did not have the train noise problem any more since he had his guys holding up traffic for the train. Obviously he had to make arrangements with the train conductors not to blow their horn to make that work.

I said from the very beginning that I had every confidence that Matt would do anything and everything he could to rectify this problem, but I have to admit even I didn't think he'd be able to resolve it as quickly as he has. He has taken the bull by the horns by hiring his own "safety staff" at his own expense, something that benefited all his neighbors in addition to himself. Does anyone think he managed to get anyone else in the area to chip in?

As Estebanh pointed out he probably also had to pay off the workers on the train. Clearly, simply holding up a sign that said "Please don't blow your horn wasn't going to be enough to do it when, by some earlier reports some of those guys actually seemed to get some vicious joy out of waking up the gringos in the hotel. At the very least, they probably figured that, if the gringo hotel owner was willing to pay guys to hold up signs and direct traffic in order to eliminate the noise, there was probably money to be had by them too.

But I'll go one step beyond Estebanh said. I think that German Marin, the director of the Transit Police, was also playing for a kickback too. That article at the top of the thread quoted him as saying "I think he (the owner of the Hotel) can not legally do that" and that there was a "clear obligation for drivers to activate the whistle." Sure! That is easy enough for him to say when loud whistles are a much cheaper solution for his department rather than paying to put in proper traffic gates as it should. They couldn't care less about running their trains across busy city streets or the disturbance their whistles cause to local residents and businesses alike. As long as their boss is insisting the train workers blow their whistles, there is only so much payoffs to them can do. I'm betting Matt probably wound up having to do something to get the transit director on board too.

Anyway, hats off to Matt for taking the bull by the horns and fixing the problem. It is things like that which show why his hotel is so popular. He does whatever it takes to make his guests comfortable.

i am here and i will say the noise has been cut down a lot especially in the morning hours when the guys directing traffic and holding the signs asking the conductor not to blow the horn are out there. still get the occasional ass that refuses to cooperate but i would say thats maybe one of every ten that pass by. and will the commuter train thats a lot of trains.

left monday and the health dept was there and taking decibel tests of some sort to determine if the noise was acceptable. i would say the train noise in the morning is about one tenth of what it was. seems as though traffic on the street is also getting redirected right past amistad. i would say that the traffic has increased substantially

If this is ONE TENTH of what it was, I shudder to think what it was like before. That train horn is moth........ing LOUD!

Let me put it this way... I'm staying at SL in the Clubhouse wing for the first time ever and I can CLEARLY hear that sucker. I'd never really heard it before given I usually stay in Modern or Mansion.

And it seems different train conductors play that train whistle in different ways. Some guys do 2 shorts and one long blast, but there's one guy who just leans on that horn for all he's worth.

And it starts pretty darn early, like at 4:30 or 5.

I'm impressed with Matt's way of dealing with the situation, but if what Amistad has now is an improvement over what it was before all I can say is I'm sorry for you Amistad patrons. Hope Matt can work this thing out with the city soon.

Ave. 3 is being rebuilt from Parque Espana to Parque Nacional, and the traffic is being detoured to Ave. 9. Lots of buses. :D

MH, the trains before sounded and felt like that they were coming right through your room, especially if you were on the east side of the hotel, which directly faces the tracks. Penthouse 310 is on that side, and it has the huge wall-length window, can only imagine what the trains were like in that room!

La Amistad's roof is most accessible. Barrett's M82A1M (or any derivative of the Barrett M82) might be useful to help the train conductor understand the significance (or lack thereof) of the blaring horn. Image
