On that same flight, they were overbooked, so I had to sit in the co-pilots seat. That was fun!

Where was the co-pilot? I'd be nervous flying with only 1 pilot. You need a second pilot in case something happens. The co-pilot helps with navigation, radio, checklists, etc.

"Navigation, radio, checklists? We don't need no stinkinc navigation, radio checklists!"

Rasclat, I apologize for the book (not really :P ). I realized at the time that it was probably more than you really needed to know, MUCH more, but I always like to throw in complete information for OTHERS who might have similar questions that those contingencies might apply to.

Re: the "catapults", I'm guessing they must be talking about sling shots since they mentioned toy guns in the line before that, but I could be wrong (wouldn't be the 1st time). Do K*ds still play with those things (and take them on their vacation to CR) :? ? I used to have one way back when I was a K*D (you know, in medieval times) and was pretty deadly with it too :D.

So you are worried about only one pilot, yet you will take a bus or taxi through the winding mountain roads, with only one driver. At least the pilots aren't passing on blind curves and meeting others with only inches of clearance. I like the twin engine idea and also nature air has larger side windows.....if you like to view the scenery.

My anecdotal two cents: Nature Air in a unanimous decision! Based on the EMPHATIC, safety-related advice from an established but forgotten CR guide book and the input of 5 or 6 CR veterans, all gringos. Not very scientific, I admit...Took Nature Air to Bahia Drake this spring, and did some "research" beforehand. To state the obvious, I survived the journey.

I flew Sansa to Quepos because Nature Air was full. I was at the time 2002 that they NA had never had a crash.

5 of us flew Sansa in April to Puerto Jimenez in a 4 seat airplane, one of my buddies was the co-pilot..... can you see where this is going.... anyhow it was a kick but if you have more than a carry on you will probably need to pick it up later. The really cool part is the view you have going down and the landing in Puerto Jimenez is to die for...... Actually we were bummed that we flew Nature Air back to San Jose.

You flew in a 4-seater on Sansa? Sansa doesn't use any planes that small. They mostly use 12-seater Cessna Grand Caravans.

We were supposed to fly on Nature Air but they oversold the flight. Sansa was able to handle the overbooked people 4 in our party and the 1 from the other party that got bumped and we were on a small turbo prop red & white, I do have video of it.

I've been a few of these flights to the coast before and they can be very rough. The pilots have a look of fear a lot of times. The earlier in the morning your flight the better before the storms kick up.

I used to drop my girl off in Pavas-Rohrmoser airport early in the morning.

She would want to be there at 5:15 even though the flight took off at 6:15. She got a latter flight in a storm and swore she'd never fly again. After that, if she couldn't get the early flight, she'd take the bus or wait til the next morning.

It's not unheard of. Even in the USA, airlines can operate certain aircraft single-pilot. It can depend on any combination of length of flight, size/weight of aircraft, and number of passengers the aircraft carries. The Caravan is very simple aircraft to operate, and was actually designed to operate single-pilot, so unless the airline ordered some options from Cessna, there is really not a whole lot a second pilot can do. Of course, the second brain and set of eyes rarely makes things worse.

I know they can be flown single-pilot. I meant that a second pilot is useful in case of a problem. They can look for a landing spot (preferably not the side of a mountain), handle radio, etc.

That's just about the time they changed their name to NA, forgot what it was before, but more than a couple of crashes was why they changed their name.
