Look at International Living Magazine. Very informative magazine and wesite. Lots of info for people looking to retire overseas without breaking the bank.

As someone who has also thought of this, I understand your concerns. The short of it is, you will only truly know what is right for you, through experience.

Many people read these boards thinking they will get a straight answer. Forget it! What you get is Opinions. That's fine just realize that.

I'm sure deep down you know this and it is always good to ask. The truth is "just do it". If you look back you will find the real answers come from experience.

In the long run as others have suggested you have to find out for yourself. The good part is you have narrowed it down to only two places. I like those too and would include Panama but again that is my Opinion.

I think it would also be helpful to seek out expats that you can trust. That is those who seem to be living a life you would like to live. Trust is important as it is reported many times that the expats are sometimes the people you have to watch out for the most. However there are most definitely good expats too, just repeating what others warn of.

I wish you luck. As others have said...go out there and explore. Maybe 6 months or more in a place to see what you think. There is no learning like experience.

PS As for International Living....take this with a Huge "Grain of Salt" ...International Living is a for profit organization that is very profitable. They do not discuss both sides of the situation. They only make the good seem more Grand. It is almost funny the reality versus the pretty pictures they paint of a place. Not to say it is bad just that they are marketing to sell you something.

I have a blog I'm doing about life in Costa Rica, and one covers the 'how much does it cost' question:

http://www.usexpatcostarica.com/2009/12 ... -rica.html

Perhaps it'll be of interest, perhaps not. YMMV as far as costs go but I give some ballpark numbers and other considerations.

Also look into ARCR's 2-day seminar held once a month, designed to give you the nuts and bolts of retiring to/ living here. Prime fact I got: 50% of expats who move here go back home or somewhere else within 2 years--the culture shock is too much for them.

I have heard that number and several others, some a bit higher some a bit lower, bantered about for years. However I have never seen any empirical data to support it. Are you aware of any?

Even if it IS true that 50% move back within 2 years, I'd want to know if they regretted the move, or regretted that they had to move back (economic reasons or family reasons, whatever).

I'd heard that 50% number at the ARCR Seminar, and surprisingly enough for me, didn't question it. Tough to get hard data with the large number of perpetual tourists who necessarily fly under the statistical radar. You might ask the Exec. Director of ARCR. That said, knowing the dreams I've heard expressed by would-be immigrants all puffed up by the aforementioned International Living, TV shows and countless condo peddlers, it sure feels about right. Pitiful sight to see when bubbly dreams crash into reality, isn't it? That's partly why those ARCR seminars exist, to not only inform those who have done at least a bit of due diligence but also to de-gas those who haven't (at least that's what I got out of it). And few of these folks have anything like the support group CRT is (I don't think the Republicans Abroad or the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW quite qualifies)--most of these folks are quite alone and quite adrift.
