Just wondering, are taxis available 24 hour? If I stay at the SL, are there usually taxis outside to take or I have to flag one down? Also some people say the taxi fare to the HDR is $1, others $2, sometimes I see $5. Do I basically have to negotiate with each driver every time I get in the cab?

Thanks!

taxi to HDR from SL should be no more than 500-600c. There is no way ppl charge $5. Best is to have colones not dollar on you when taking cabs. I can see that when the cab ride is around 500-600c people tend to give the driver 1000c bill which is close to $2 USD. that should be the most that you pay including tip to driver.

Yes taxis are availale 24hrs.

Pirata=Pirates will try and charge dos mil (2000 colones) negotiate before you enter the car.

Pirata's have no meter or refuse to use the meter.

I'm sure if you do a search you'll find all your answers.

1000 colones is more than enough from SL to HDR.

Keep some change on you. c500 & c100 coins or at least c1000 notes.

F-ing taxistas never have change.

The problem is that at midnight when SL closes and you want to go to HDR, you will have to pay ¢2,000 to one of the pirates. There are really few options. You can get the hotel to call you a regular, metered taxi but you may have to wait about 10 minutes.

Or you can walk to the corner and try to hail a passing cab. Good luck at that hour. I always do that during the day, as many taxis pass by there, but that may not be the smartest move at night.
