Nice forum! I'm on the verge of doing a last minute trip to CR or Bangkok; I've only been to Amsterdam for hobby fun, and totally enjoyed the quality. I'm flying solo and know very little Spanish (though I've never had a problem communicating in all my visits to CR (1 time prior for non-hobby fun), Dominican Republic or Mexico prior. So I've scoured this forum as much as time will permit for now (gotta book the flight ASAP). All this talk about wingmen and some uncouth/loutish behavior from wrong element types is a bit of a concern. I'm a professional I/T manager type, and can remain politely and gregariously reserved and non-boorish though inside I'm ready to party like it's 1999 (um, 2010?). Seems like many like-minded will be in the gulch (I got that) this upcoming week. Would welcome guidance while in CR.
Is 8 nights too short, too long? Just to mostly focus on the gals?
8 nights sounds too short. I would go for 365 if I could.
Seriously, it depends on your budget and endurance. The longest I've ever been is 5 days/4 nights, but I'm planning a 9 day stay in October.
Two pieces of advice: read this thread:

... and join CRT as a VIP member. You'll get the $39 investment back in your first trip to CR.
You might have problems finding accomodations at any of the usual monger hangouts (SL, Amistad, DR) for LD weekend at this late date (if that indeed is your plan).
BTW, we're in the same profession (quite a few IT pros, managers, directors and even the odd CIO or two around here). And I wouldn't be TOO concerned -- I have never witnessed loutish behavior at SL or Amistad. I've seen a little at HDR but, as best done in these cases, I usually adopt the "live and let live" approach.
