Don't think service industry people are a good analogy. Most people in the bar/restaurant industry are known to wildly over tip and are eargerly sought after as customers by other hospitality workers. I can not say if it is true or not with maids.

In my opinion why not just throw the maids a few bucks a day for the job they do? You know they don’t make much anyway and it sure is nice to see a nice friendly smile when you return to the hotel/room or back to an establishment for another trip of R&R. I tip two dollars per day, times that by the length of my normal vacations and we are talking less than $20.00. What’s the big deal? I know it is to those maids though…..

In addition to ¢2,000 I also put all my lose change in a glass and leave that also for the maid. Do this because mostly out of being lazy and not wanting to keep track of the value of the coins, and to avoid several pounds of metal in my pockets. And with my eyes getting bad on details, it is not worth the bother to learn the small stuff.- even that can make a difference in some of the places I been for some one.
This has been a habit every where I travel.

I tip $2.00 /day, but then usually also give small gifts etc. at the end of my stay (i.e. perfume, etc.) Also, I invite the room maid at the end of my trip to keep any leftover shampoo, conditioner, booze, candy or whatever. They always seem appreciative. I also give a $2.00 additional propina for extra towels, etc.

Once I tipped Maria (formerly at SL) $10.00. She actually threw her arms around me and wept her thanks.

J-Mack... you're wrong. Tipping is not in fact a North American custom; otherwise words like "propina" wouldn't exist in other languages. In my experience, people who either undertip or don't tip at all have never had to work a service job where tips are considered part of the whole compensation package. I agree El Ciego
The chicas use a lot of towels shit man. I also love the big smiles and hello I get in the mornings. small price to pay, On my last trip I gave the guards some nice Smith and Wesson flashlights also a small price to pay. They are all nice people there and they look out for us beyond just giving us towels. I have some close friends who think it's crazy but you know what. It's my money and compared to what I spend on the room and chicas it's not even noticeable.

I don't tip chicas much and bargain as best I can without being rude, and as far as the bartenders and other staff I don't generally tip until the day I leave and then give then each 5000 colonies.

I feel like family when I am there and very comfortable. Yes I am a SL Groupie.

Another point of fact to make my case, I have had several bartenders whisper in my ear not her when sitting with chicas. Yes they help us. we reap what we sow. spelling?

Like I said, I think tipping is personal preference. I believe in taking care of those who take care of you, I live my life this way.

When it comes to tipping nobody needs suggestions, do what you do, period.

Understand, I'm not criticising anyone who tips less than/more than/differently from the way I do, and frankly it's often variable depending upon circumstances. Like Xman00, I also throw all my coins into the tip jar on the bar at SL...it is always appreciated. The only coins I keep are the 500 and 100 CRC coins, because they are useful for paying taxi fares. All the "chicken feed" goes into the tip jar.

What you tip is absolutely up to you, but do remember that most of these people who take such good care of us depend largely upon our tips. And as someone said above, the smile is worth it. Just MO.

For 3 or 4 days stay I usually tip 10% of one night's stay, a little less for 1 or 2 nights and a little more the longer the stay. If I feel like any $ has been stolen they get no tip. In Pereira, CO there were no room safes so had to stash some cash inbetween some study guides and checked my accounting twice and about $60 missing. No tip for you.

Tipping is pretty much an American thing. I think it make us feel better. The balance of the world does not tip nearly as much as Americans.

Remember it is for superior service not simply for doing their job. Some people are preemptive and tip up front to get superior service but remember that you may have 2-3 people taking care of you so you just pimped the other two.

$75!!! WTF that is beyond NYC tipping. I hope they wipe your ass for that kind of $$$. I have to ask what kind of propina do you give to the chica that sucks on your crank?

Really?

Keeping Up With 'Keep the Change'

Not many people remember that the word "tip" is an acronym for "to insure promptness" anymore. Tipping has become standardized. In some places, everyone from the waiter to porters to proprietors figure gratuities as part of wages. In others, it's a different story. Here's some help in paying your own percentage.

Restaurant Tips by Country
Country TIP
Comment
United States 15%-20%
Expected, but usually not included in bill.
France 12%-15%
Usually included in hotel, restaurant bills.
U.K. 10%-12%
Service charge usually in restaurant bill.
Japan 10%-20%
Tip usually included in hotel, restaurant bill; otherwise, tipping not common.
Germany 10%-15%
Service charge usually included in restaurant bill; small additional tip is norm.
Hong Kong 10%-15%
Tipping common for all services.
Indonesia 10%
Usually included in bill; additional tip sometimes added.
Italy 10%
Tips expected for most services.
Malaysia 10%
Tipping usual for porters and room service.
Mexico 10%
Tipping common for most services.
Philippines 10%
Tipping common for most services.
Saudi Arabia 10%
Tips usually included in restaurant or hotel bill; extra 10% sometimes given for special service.

Maybe it's not just "an American thing". :?:

Folks, tip whatever you're comfortable with. If that means "zero", then by all means leave nothing. It's your money.

Just don't presume to tell me what to do with MY money, ok?

I agree that it is up to the individual. I like to leave something, usually 2000c aday for normal service, more for extras. I think it adds a little to their mundane day to look in the little brown envelope. I dont like the propina figured into resturant bills because I am sure the server allways comes out on the short end of the stick.

Not presuming anything. I note that some guys get flamed for not negotiating with the chicas and paying cien (they are embarassed to admit it in their TR) and when someone tips an incredible sum of money for house keeping it is not an issue. I applaud you having the means to be generous and I am sure you get outstanding service at the hotels.

I still maintain that tipping is an american thing. In many of the countries that you listed the locals do not hold to this practice. It is the visitors that tip. Many dont know local customs and simply tip as a means to CYA.
