Somebody is asking me whether there are any direct flights from SJO to MDE. I thought there were but after a search, I didn't find any.

Does anybody know?

Copa seems to have a direct flight, CM0825, return flight is 824.

$159 each way, $477 round trip including taxes.

Those flights go through Panama City both ways, I do not think Copa (or anyone else) has a non stop on that route... Although it is a pretty short layover in PTY

No, all the other flights stopped in Panama, CM0825 was direct when I looked on their web site.

I can't get in to their website right now, it seems to be down, to verify..

EDIT:

Ok, Copa's site is a bit confusing.. it appeared that it was a direct flight, as all the other flights specifically listed SJO-PTY, PTY-MDE.. but it turns out the reason they did that was because one leg of those flights was on Aero Republica. CM0825 is the only flight that is completely on COPA, which is why they did not list the PTY stop..

May have been confused because you don't get off the plane. CM0825 stop in Panama City

Copa Airlines
Flight 825 Departs: 4:01p
Juan Santamaria Intl (SJO) Arrives: 6:18p
Tocumen Intl (PTY)
Coach | Fare code: Q03Q30/SR | Boeing 737-700 (Narrow-body Jet) | 1h 17m | 326 miles | 9+ seats remain
Layover in Panama City, Panama (PTY) for 0h 36m
Copa Airlines
Flight 825 Departs: 6:54p
Tocumen Intl (PTY) Arrives: 8:15p
Jose Marie Cordova (MDE)
Coach | Fare code: Q03Q30/SR | Boeing 737-700 (Narrow-body Jet) | 1h 21m | 325 miles | 9+ seats remain

Well, I'd actually call that a non-stop, really.. if you don't get off the plane.. how is it any different from having an extra 30 minutes of flight time for some reason?

The only issue with stops is having to change planes, make connections deplane and reboard, etc.. otherwise, it hardly matters.

Non stop is exactly that....NON STOP! ie: SJO/MDE

Direct is no change of plane but stops in between origin/destination...ie: SJO/PTY/MDE

Connection involves change of plane...ie: Flt 2100 SJO/PTY then flight 3400 PTY/MDE

kabish :!: :?:

I take that 824 each trip and short layover is an understatement. the flight from SJO never seems to get a terminal so they pick you up on the tarmac, by the time you get inside the terminal you have to haul ass to make the boarding call. I've been there when they've closed the doors 15 mins before flight, I asked "are you leaving early?" and I shit you not they actually told me everyone had boarded. So I added it to my personal Copa horror stories

Everything goes through PTY, the flight you get on Medellin is usually enroute from Honduras or at least that's been my experience.

Klockman,

Do you have to deplane in PTY? If not, why not just stay on the plane?

BTW Cujo, the flight can be pricey (cost over $800 with taxes for the dates I wanted), but cheap with miles, 10K each way.

Ciaociao

The best is the AA flight that goes to Miami has a long layover and then goes to MDE. Total travel time about 11 hours.

Yes you have to get off the plane, the one that brought you down from SJO is going somewhere else.

And because you get dumped on the tarmac and get shuttled to the terminal you lose valuable time. Then the terminal that flies to MDE of course is the furthest one from where you'll enter once you get off the shuttle.

You have to haul ass, so that 36 min layover can seem like a 3 min layover. It's not unusual for me to spend a few mins on that flight catching my breath

Can also fly Avianca San Jose - Bogota and Bogota- MDE but there is no direct flight. Layover is pretty short in PNY and its actually a very nice little airport where you can buy some cheap clothes of good brands. I have taken this route 4-5 times this year as I am currently holding a appartment in both cities:D
