Obviously, YMMV. I got this from WesternUnion.com, which is tied in to the bank rates.

The colones is devalued daily at an annualized rate of about 10%. The current rate is BUY:459.69, SELL 461.27. Whatever you do do not exchange your money at the new currency exchange at the airport. Last Tuesday they were buying at 413.00

I find this a good site for exchange rates.

www.oanda.com/convert/cheatsheets

you can print conversions both ways and carry with you for convenience.

Koppite & Joluko,

They both excellent sites to find out how many colones you should get for your dollar but you need to know the current exchange rate. An excellent source for that is

Hey Guys,

I have some old German Marks and some Italian Lire laying around the house. Not realy enough to make an effort to take to the bank here. Does anybody know if the local CR Banks or Casino exchanges still handel these pre EU notes. They should still be good for a couple of years. Would they charge a fee for exchange like they do here at the local banks?

Thanks for the info.

The bank in the departure area of the airport upstairs, Banco San Jose, always gives me a good exchange rate. Currently their rate is only .0124 percent lower than the Banco Central. If you convert $1000 to colones, you will only be paying an extra $1.24 in the conversion fee.

That is correct the Bank at the airport has always been a good choice for exchange. What I was referring to is the new money exchange in the arrival area that just opened.

About 2 hours ago, the casino paradisio gave me 460. Thought that was pretty good.

On 1/14/05 my Visa Bill cleared at Presidente: 454 +/- a few centavos. I think they factor the exchange when you Begin your stay...
