Anyone stayed in them? How are they? Is it worth the $10 to upgrade to the large standard? (in which I stayed and it was ok, but I figured, why not just pay the $10 less since at that room-level, what could the difference be???)

I always get a standard room and it suits me fine. I'm not one for frills. None of them have much of a view but everything I need is there. The only thing is the rooms right on the court area can be noisy. But I have known many people who don't mind since the noise is worse at times you aren't likely to be sleeping. I get so tired after a full day in CR I don't know if it would bother me either.

I like the rooms away from the court area, kind of behind the front desk. Go right past the desk after you walk in, go thru a little passage way and you'll find a little den surrounded by 4 rooms. That is where I am staying in 2 weeks. The den area is nice for some semi-privacy before you go to your room and get down to it.

Gentlemen,

I believe the last post was referring to the Club House Section just passed and behind the front desk area that also now includes the new gym.

Just a comment here. I usually stay at SL and one time on the last two nights had to move to the older rooms in the courtyard.YMMV but the room was like a dungeon to me. After that time I always book way ahead of my trip to insure that I have a better room for the entire week. I try to be thrifty but forget that when it comes to being comfortable. Illusions and the rest are good rooms,a little more expensive but nicer. i have a trip planed in October and have booked in the new section. I will report later about the room. If I cannot secure a room in the new or Mansion section I would try the Amistad.

I'm booked there in the Modern section for an upcoming trip and if they try and move me into the courtyard (light sleeper who likes nicer rooms) I will simply check out and dispute any charges. I will always consider an upgrade but not a downgrade especially since they have a 72 hr. cancellation notice or you pay the full tab. Realize it is CR but for the prices we need to pay expect it to be smooth and not them having it both ways.

Oh and no way they gonna move me out of a nice room after per original contract I was to be there the full stay. Again will dispute thru my CC Co. and go to next hotel.

Contract? Buddy, its a hotel, not a legal agreement. Besides, I dont think Bill's outfit would charge you if they downgraded you, if that would even happen.

I agree, that's not something I would worry about. If you have a room name confirmed, its yours...

I have been trying to find a thread to ask this question. I guess this ones as good as any. I am planning my first trip in Nov. I am completely new to mongering so will need a little hand holding the first couple of days from one of you guys.

In your opinions, where would you stay? La Amistad for $60 or SL for $60. How much nicer are $120 rooms at SL than the $60 rooms. I know I want to stay at either of these 2 hotels but cant decide which one. The thought of the chicas hanging out at the SL is pretty enticing. Im assuming the $120 room at Sl is in the mansion wing? Im just wondering if its worth an extra $300 for a 5 night stay. I will be a vip member here in a few weeks so I will get the discount but really 10% is not that big of a deal to me....Anyway I figured you guys could help me make a decision.
Thanks........

I never stayed at the Amistad, but I'm going back to the SL for the second time. Its VERY laid back (except when the occasional cat fight erupts...) and very good staff. I'd recommend the SL!

My dos colones:

I have stayed in Amor (most basic), Felicidad (an old section junior suite with a bathroom the size of a phone booth but a great four-poster bed and sofa), Belleza (courtyard) and a couple rooms in the "modern" wing (Hermosa and el Rey). Here's my take:

No matter which section you stay in, the room will be fairly clean and comfortable, the staff will still serve you well and with a sincere smile, you'll still have use of the gym and computer center, and can still enjoy the bar/restaurant and make new friends with chicas and mongers alike. The courtyard rooms may pose a problem for light sleepers (as they did for me). Felicidad is right in the entry hallway and IMHO lacks privacy; if you can hear the guards and guests outside, they sure as shit can hear you... Although the newest wing, the Mansion wing is elegant, it's too expensive for me.

No two rooms in any section of the SL are exactly alike, although they may share certain amenities in common (lockboxes, good TV's with satellite porn, minibars).

OkieMike, here's a non-answer to your question: I've also stayed several nights in the Amistad. I truly enjoy both hotels, but each has a different ambience and advantages. I'll be staying at the Amistad (room 211) for my first eight nights of the trip, and then will move to el Rey at the SL for the remaining eight nights of my trip. I like el Rey because it features a nice kitchenette and a terrace area in addition to the king bed and bathroom with large tub, not just a shower.

I will not permit myself to be "downgraded" either; while the Courtyard rooms are perfectly serviceable, I prefer the brighter, newer and more spacious modern section. But for guys on a budget, the older rooms are fine.

Hope this helps.

On my last post, I said i was downgraded from Illusions (new section0 to Belliza(old section). I have to say that I had booked a flight from DTW to SJO. Upon doing so, I booked Illusions, because I stayed ih that room before. At the time I wanted to stay seven nights and they told me that I could have the room for five because it was booked after that.I decided to take the chance. I am not blaming management for this, just to make it clear. However on my future trips I always book well in advance.I just do not care for the old section.Advice, book months in advance.I was really pleased with Illusions, small but adequate with a jacuzzi.I have booked El Tigre this time because I viewed it on my last trip.Hope I enjoy it as much as the Illusion room.
