Brother Cujo's answer is the dead-on correct one but can be tough to get into on short notice. O/W neighborhood options include La Amistad or El Castillo. Of course you haven't mentioned any price points, level of comfort, etc. and with taxis plentiful and cheap, maybe consider Hotel Freebird or some other. The Clarion and Hotel Dunn Inn both have merits. We'll give you the easy, expected answers but all the info is in this Forum--a little research is all that's needed.

First trip ever? If so, you have to stay at the Del Rey, at least for a few days of your trip. You have to be in the belly of the beast.

I'm a converted SL/Amistad guy, but theres just something about being able to walk downstairs at 4am on a Tuesday morning and still have your pick of girls. DR FTW! (at least for like 2 nights, then get the hell outta there!)

Simple and best answers are, La Amistad if not booked or SL Mansion wing. Either is great, safe experience!

Get ready for some fun... :D

He said that he didn't want to sleep in a dump, so HDR is out.

I'm going to have to beg to differ about the HDR. The first time I stayed there I had a great room. Now the girls did say it was bigger and acted a little surprised (the room...not me). I would get the same room again. But it wasn't a dump and I couldn't hear noise and they were really nice. The chica fee is stupid and I wasn't aware it was being charged to my room. It adds up.

However, the SL is simply the best. There really is no comparison.

If for some reason you have a hard time getting a room at any of the other places try the Morazan just 50 yards away from the DR and 52.00 a night out the door, no chica fees and free breakfast.

Colbs1 Much of it depends on you. Determine what you want to experience while you are here.

If it were me or one of my friends, I too would seek out the SL, La Amistad or El Castillo. They are not Five Stars but you will not be disappointed or embarrassed. They are what most guys want by coming here -- good, comfortable lodgin which puts them in the right place in order to do what they came for.

When my friends come I recommend the SL first and my friends have never been disappointed.

Enjoy!

Never been to the SL but the DR combined with the Key Largo gived you that gritty 24/7 insane brothel atmosphere.

I always stay at the Presidente. It gets slammed a lot on this board because it requires the chicas to adhere to a dress code. However, they all have extra pants or shirts or can get them - they are all prepared. The SL is far away from the action and you must not walk to and from the Del Ray at night; whereas the Presidente is about two blocks away, walkable, but with great care. The staff is friendly, there is no chica fee, many of the rooms have great views, the bar and restaurant, right on Central Avenue, is the best in terms of viewing people walking by. I've met great friends there and have always loved it. Iyt's ground zero for me. OK, slam away!

Brother Sr. Miguel--No slam from me--if Costa Rica is about anything, it's about freedom of choice. There may be an internecine struggle for the hearts and minds of Newbies, but to corn a phrase, if you are an informed consumer--"It's all good, some's just better--for you." I'm not some wishy-washy peacemaker--trust me, I have my passions and argue them strenuously and hopefully, eloquently, but in the end it's personal choice.
Who knows? If El Prez keeps or steps up it's current policy, we may have a time when non-pro Ticas can be seen there without being stigmatized (as they are now).
