The Gran Hotel Costa Rica is the host for a Chess zonal tournament for the next week or so. I don't know what the situation is for viewing. It is in two of the halls there. Besides a prize fund, the winner gets to go to Khanty-Mansisk Russia in November-December for a major tournament. Since the players are mainly from places like Cuba and Colombia it would be interesting seeing their response to Russian weather. I don't know if Alejandro Ramirez, the only GM from CR, is playing.

If they have to play outside in Russia in December then the Latin Americans will be at a serious disadvantage, but last I saw chess tournaments are all indoors.

Is the Gran Hotel Costa Rica the one across from the National Theatre? Interesting building and probably an expensive hotel.

I like your quote.

At a tournament in the Netherlands last winter I saw players from Venezuela and the Phillipines wearing winter coats inside during play. Most of their interviews were about how cold it was. The Scandanavians were outside in shirtsleeves playing soccer thinking it was like a nice spring day. I expect most of us have met Ticos who are from near sea level who consider San Jose really cold. It is all a matter of perspective. In case anybody is interested, here are the folks playing. The strongest Tico isn't in it. Iturrizaga is one of the people who was freezing in an interview last year ;-)
