I've stayed there once and gotta say that in my opinion, the layout of that hotel makes it a tough play for mongers and ecotourist to co-exist. If I remember correctly, it is impossible to kind of sneak through the lobby unseen or in a side entrance. I work with a couple of hotels in Jaco, that only because of the layout, make it ok for the two types of tourists not to bother each other. But still see the occasional gringa giving stink eye. haha

Ageed! As much as I love the story telling, I only do it when only other mongers are around, or best, no one else at all, just a table of us guys. I remember being in MDE with a group at a nice dinner place and they were going on and on about the action they were getting. Finally, I said, keep it down, not everyone approves, and furthermore, don't assume they don't speak English.

Trip Advisor review for La Amistad:

“Hotel-come-Brothel?”
Hotel La Amistad

I had high hopes for this place, considering TripAdvisor rated it #2 (out of 50) hotel in San Jose and seemed like a good value (about $65 for a decent looking place and rave reviews) for those of us who are on a slight budget. The front desk staff was friendly and helpful and the room did deem to be a good value (it included a tv, its own bathroom, and a temper-pedic bed). Now the bad stuff...did you know prostitution is legal in Costa Rica? Well I didn't but was enlightened about 5 min after we arrived at the hotel. As we were checking in, an older american man escorted his prostitute up to his room (she looked not even 18 mind you...oh and it was still the afternoon!). Another 5 minutes go by, and another mid 50s american man walks down with his "mami" (yes he actually referred to her as that to his friends) and she leaves. I also noticed the hookers give the front desk receptionist something and pick it back up when they leave..it looked like some card. I saw the 3rd prostitute when I was using there computer/internet (oh thats actually another positive...free internet). The hotel is all hard-wood floors, which is pretty but not when you're trying to go to sleep and all you hear are the clacking of the hookers heals..and lots of doors opening/closing. Also, Im a bit of a hypochondriac so all I could think about was how many prostitutes have had sex in the bed...it was like an MSNBC under cover investigation episode was running through my head the whole night...the ones where they blacklight the sheets. I did find 2 small hairs in the bed (Im going to pretend it was off a guys head of hair and not the other "thing" or else I would have a panic attack). The comforter was a little gross and dated (it was satin-like material....you can't bleach that stuff). In the morning I had the pleasure of overhearing the old american men's sexscapades with their costa rican lovers...gross! Oh and the breakfast was disappointing (few fruit, toast, peanut butter, juice box). I guess the hotel is near brothels and an area of San Jose with lots of prostitutes. Do not bring your Ch*ldren here. If you don't mind the hookers and some noise at night then you will do fine here.

You can’t make everyone happy. We sold over 800 rooms last month and you will have an occasional complaint. Most the time it is someone with unrealistic expectations and a little neurotic (sp tom spell check please!!!) too begin with. Breakfast is made to order. 800 other people figured out how to order so i cant explain why she had a problem. We do have a mixed crowd and ask that common sense be exercised in the common areas. We appreciate CRTer´s support.

Regards
Matt

Some guys should really learn to keep their volume down. The last time I stayed there, my girl and I were coming down the stairs around breakfast time, and I could hear some guy's all too graphic breakfast story abour BBBJ and CIM while I was still at the bottom of the stairscase, that's like 40 feet away. Imagine what the people sitting at the other table could hear.

What I'm even more curious to know is how many husbands of these eco-tourist couples get busy scheming solo trips so they can join the Big Fun...maybe even pull one of us aside to get details. My further interest will be aroused (so to speak) when the bar/restaurant opens--Mkink better have a fire hose ready to wet down the incensed Gringas.

I was hanging with some chicas once and this guy runs up to me in a hurry and tells me is wife is at the hotel and he is sneaking away for some fun. He asked me where he could take a girl, if the ones I was with were working, and if I could translate the deal for him. I did and all were happy. Me and the rest of the chicas laughed like crazy at the rapidness of it. I mean he was in and out of there w/chica in less than 3 minutes.

I stayed at La Amistad for many weeks. The hotel is very nice with the exception of the gringarillas that hang around the breakfast area (or anywhere else that food is left unguarded). Can't say I enjoyed sitting at breakfast with some gringa constantly putting the spurs to her milktoast poosie-whipped excuse for a man. Almost told one exactly what I thought one morning but decided Matt didn't need the headache.

Then again, maybe he enjoys the headache since he insists on trying to mix Billy Graham and Hugh Hefner!

I stay there every time i go to SJ, and have never had a problem.
The food is great when you order, you get what you want.
I will always stay if Mat has a room.

Great story Brother CC--I can picture it in my mind's eye. You know what, even in that ultra-short time, it's still the best sex that guy had in a looong time--and the Chica probably didn't tell him the ceiling needed painting while he was pouring the coals. Ho ho

First, I've found that Tripadvisor mainly functions as a place for dipshits to vent over the smallest things. Four or five times I've stayed at hotels that people have raked over the coals there, & they were fine.

Second, I laughed my ass off over that review ("oh, and it was still the afternoon"), guess she's never had sex with the light on, either. I don't make it a point to flaunt the chica I'm with (I've noticed gringa turistas the last couple of times at the Castillo), but I'm sure as hell not doing any walk of shame, either.

I might stay at the Amistad next time just for the sheer perversity of outraging a gringa by walking in with a hottie from the DR.

Brother El O--To induce total apoplexy, walk in with 2...And have the 2 gayin' it up a bit with each other...And make sure it's around High Tea with lotsa Gringas in the lobby eating scones or whatever. That one we want a video of. Oh yes.
