Most of my extended family thinks I am a dull dresser, which I am by choice. So I have half a closet of gifts (shirts, sweaters, shorts..) that have not been worn. Was thinking of bringing some of it to Costa Rica and giving away during the trip (perhaps to my van driver or someone at the hotel). Would this type of gesture be ok or considered rude?

Nothing beats cash, but the ticos I have dealt with would be very appreciative of a gift like that.

I'll take that old sport jacket where you hid a bunch of chica cash and forgot was there.

Being the wheeler-dealer that I am I would recommend not giving all the stuff to just anybody.

If you find a girl who you especially enjoyed being with ask her if she has a brother or father or uncle or cousin who might like a shirt. You will be amazed at the mileage this will buy you. She might even find something she likes for herself. Women love lounging around in men's shirts.

Sure it sounds crass but if you're giving them away anyway may as well use them to your best advantage. What the hell, it's just business. It's not like you're going to be meeting these girls in church, eh?

MCR, I do it every trip. Take all my running t-shirts from past races and other clothes like polo shirts and older dress shirts. I give them to civilians like the van driver, shoe shine guy and other people who, I feel, deserve them. They are greatly appreciated, and I've seen the recipients wearing them around town.

Don't forget Latinoheat, I know which room you have reserved and will have a surprise for you when you get between the sheets with your gorda chica

Why drag your unwanted clothes all the way to CR? I try to travel lighter each trip and don't even check bags anymore. I'd box that crap up and give it to Goodwill or Salv. Army.

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Yeah Paco, I try to travel as light as possible. Even with a few extra shirts I can still fit in a carry on. Then I use that space to bring home fishing and surfing t-shirts, which help camouflage my reasons for the trip.

Have a great trip.
