For the last few years, when I have travelled anywhere (except SJO for some reason) for more than a few days I have rented apartments. Done it in Rome, Amsterdam and a few other places.
I first Google: "apartment rentals in (let's say) San Jose Costa Rica" Get a lot of hits. Everyplace I have stayed has simply blown any hotel away, at half the cost. Another option is: VRBO.com Vacation Rentals by Owner.
I found an awesome island house (thanks to fellow CRT embers) in Bocas Del Toros, in february.
This trip I found a nice listing near the Gulch. Check it out.

HolaB and I rented Casa Don Tomas about a year and a half ago and kept our chicas hostage there for about a week. It is a nice peaceful place behind the Amistad. It was worth the money, to be sure, and the girls liked it.

I prefer the full service provided by the SL, but this place is a viable and less expensive alternative.

Elkarlos,

Guess it's time to do a TR for that trip

My take on Casa Tomas. Decent apartment upstairs, 3 bdr. one bath w/suicide shower. Small TV, portable cd type jam box. No AC, so open the windows during the day. Internet was pretty good I recall.

Maid arrives in the morning around 10:30, she does the basics, leave your clothes out and she will wash, dry and fold them. She will also cleanup any dishes from breakfast or the previous evenings dinner.

The landlord lives downstairs and is a nice guy. Chances are he may know a few of your dates....in a biblical way  :) Take advantage of the outdoor jacuzzi, girls loved it.

Only complaints would be, beds were the 4 inch foam type. Luckily for me and my friend at the time we weighed in at total of 240 lbs, but if your a bigger guy and like your women the same, bruises may occur  The living room furniture probably needs to be updated, it was well worn at that time. We found out at an unfortunate time that toilet paper was rationed  Two rolls per week, so if you have a couple of chicas drinking foo foos all week by all means buy some at the store.

All in all, I would do it again, nice break fron the hotel scene, if you like to cook a meal or two there is adequete cookware. Also he has a grill if you want to BBQ, just need to buy some charcoal and starter. The girls enjoyed the peacefulness of the property, and it is a 5 minute walk to SL. If you are a light sleeper, you will awake to the sounds of the animals from the Zoo directly below you, I personally enjoyed it, I rise at 6 am daily. Another thing I recall is he has four (4) doors that you have to unlock to get in. If you think you may be a little drunk when coming home, put the keys in order on your key chain! Colombianas from the DR are so impatient when they know cookies are upstairs

I notice from his listing he has 2 beachfront properties in Santa Teresa (wherever that is). Nice find--good Site with photos and other users comments. This guy sure knows his audience.
Also, from his VRBO listing, free transfer to/ from SJO is offered for 7+ day stays.

No AC and only 1 bano kind of sucks, :? but having OralB as wingman and your personal bitch to cook breakfast and bake cookies might be cool. :)

Paco,

You might have noticed that in my above post, I did not call HolaB my "bitch," nor did I mention how "she fixed Daddy's dinner" or anything of that ilk. I would appreciate it if you would not add fuel to the fire at this time, as HolaB is still plenty upset with me for my many extracurricular dalliances in MDE. So please, please, treat HolaB with respect, at least until he sends me the rest of the MDE fotos he has promised.

Thanks.

And you're right. The one bano did suck. However, this was the rainy season and San Jose was downright cold, so the AC never came into play. One nice feature about the place was the courtyard, filled with beautiful plants and flowers, where we would sit and have coffee and watch the parrots fly in and out of their nests.

Trip report: this place blows any hotel in the area out of the water. My buddies stayed a week and I spent a couple nights after being down south, for a couple weeks.
One block from SL/La Amistad. Clean. More comfortable than any suite. (no offense, Matt) Nice Jacuzzi. Privacy from your road dogs. Full kitchen. QUIET. Great owner and you can bring all the babes you want, any time you want.
I think my only gripe would be it needs more towels. The girls sure use them up. :D
