I smell a rat.

Did Fender even really stay at the Amistad? I only ask this because I can't imagine anyone who is paying $119.00/night accepting an inferior room without making some kind of noise to the front desk. Yet no such complaint was made. Is Fender shilling for another hotel? Or what?

Even on my first brief stay at the Amistad, I knew immediately that the staff would be responsive to my needs and potential complaints. Everything I asked for was provided with neither hesitation nor delay.

Although I don't know Matt, Marlene, Rudolfo or any of the Amistad crew well, I do know that I've always been treated very well there! :D So I have to wonder what Fender's main malfunction is? And I'm not writing this out of any particular "love for the Amistad." I've stayed there, the Sportsmen's and the Presidente (chica-friendly at the time), as well as the Don Carlos and Grano d'Oro (both chica-hostile). I've been treated fairly at all three of the chica-friendly hotels...no real problems.

So, I just gotta wonder. :?

Yes, this is really ridiculous. How can you just accept all the services without a peep and then complain here. That's not fair.

Upon arrival at any hotel , I always ask to go see the room BEFORE I even check in. I may be to the extreme but I have saved a lot of trouble and been upgraded at no cost or at a discount several times.

I think La Amistad is a great place to stay. I just wish someone would stop stealing my damn toast out of the toaster every morning when I'm there !!! :P  And BTW guys.... Marlene loves it when you make her a couple pieces of fresh toast in the morning! :o That's it. Mkink, I'm bringing you another toaster the next time I'm in town! And if NHank is staying there, I'm gonna run him out of the hotel! :P

MG

No rat. I really stayed there. I haven't been back on the board b/c I've been in transit.

I didn't want to raise a stink while I was there; this was my first visit, ever, to CR. The SL was full last weekend, and not knowing the lay of the land, or whether I could find other accomodations if I was told to go screw myself, I didn't want to get in bad with the hotel management.

Also, I didn't go back and check the online room description until later, so I thought maybe I'd misremembered how big the rooms were supposed to be according to the website.

Lastly, I didn't raise a stink upon checkout because I still needed to leave my bags there for several hours before heading to the airport, planned to meander around town, and didn't want any issues. I payed what I'd agreed to pay, and chalked it up to a lesson learned.

Like I said, I just got back on line after a lot of travel and sleep. I've got a PM from the Amistad to give them a call to work it out, which I'm going to do right now, so hopefully there will be a happy ending.

Matt and staff are good people to deal with. You need to simply ask for what you want or find another hotel- like mentioned the Dunn Inn, Clarion, Presidente, Balmoral, Posada Amon, Morazon, etc. BTW The Front rooms in Sportsman are really noisy until midnight.

Too bad you had a bad experience. Book early for SL next time.

The SL is far from fool proof.
During my stay there, I had no cold water in the shower, and I came back to my door room being unlocked or unlatched on more then one occasion when it was 100% closed/locked when I left.

Of course both of the issues were resolved when I brought them up, which is great. But, I think every hotel has its days where its going to appear flawed. Im sure you could walk into a 5 star hotel and find something to your disliking if you really looked.

Fair enough. Based on the high regard for Matt on the board, I'm sure it'll be worked out. If and when it is, I'll gladly edit the content and tone my original post to so note.

That said, the thread has become more of a discussion of how I handled the situation than of the situation itself. So be it. But in all honesty, I think the following is useful information to someone looking at booking accomodations in SJ:

1. Room 203 does not fit the description of a penthouse room on La Amistad's website, but is billed at the penthouse room rate. It has a sauna and jacuzzi, but no family room, bar or patio.

2. Room 203 is an "interior" room, with no outside view, is right next to a wooden walkway and has a window that looks at an interior stairway. I personally found it to be very loud, and could easily hear people walking around the hotel and up and down the stairs.

Fender, you haven't been on long enough to know that certain hotels, mp's, chicas, and businesses are off limits to criticize. It's funny how some can be slammed, but others are untouchable. Nothing against Amistad. I stayed there once and it was ok.

Hey! That's not fair. Nor is it accurate. Despite the good reputation of the SL, I and others have openly and honestly made criticisms....my most recent one regarding the price of their laundry service. I also was probably the first to declare that from my POV, the fabled Roccio wasn't *all that.*

This same forum's members brought the anti-monger attitude of the Presidente to light, has described bad/inadequate sessions at HLH etc. etc.

I'm really sick of the burgeoning "us versus them" mentality on this board, and the apparent rise of cliques, although I've never seen a single one of these so-called cliques that acts in an unfriendly way to any other member, with the possible exception of some as$holes from the NYC area. :P :P
