I have stayed in a room with with a fridge, microwave, toaster, kitchen sink the last 4 or 5 times there, before that I stayed in the deluxe room. The kitchenette room is much bigger, the bed is king size, which helps since I'm tall. Both rooms have a/c, both have a safe. As others have said, no chica fee ever & staff treats you really well. I tried the suite once & it was large & a very nice room overlooking the street, but has no a/c, which is a deal breaker for me.

Can't see myself staying anywhere else in SJ, although I have contemplated the Amistad....it's kind of nice to have Marta say "welcome home" when I check in at the Castillo.

It's definitely a nice room, Bobcat...I'm just a mutant when it comes to temperature, I'm one of those guys who feels hot even in SJ when the locals are wearing jackets!

1life2live, I've never stayed in room 15, but I think it's on the ground floor with 2 beds if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure all the rooms in the Castillo are good, don't worry, you're going to have a great time.

I stayed in room 15 several years ago. It's in the second floor at the end of the hall. The room has a nice window and you'll be able to see the back of the INS (Instituto Nacional de Seguros) Building, their parking lot, and also, Ninth Avenue. It is a nice big room, bigger than the regular rooms, without kitchenette. It has a fridge, a microwave, a toaster, and a king size bed. It's in the old part of the hotel and the woodwork there is awesome (part of the original colonial house who belonged to an aristocratic Costa Rican family). The maids are very helpful and they will bring you what you need. You'll like the hotel. It's not the fanciest hotel in SJO, but it is a great value in my opinion. It is my home away from home!

I'm not certain what room number it is, but it is directly above the room with the pool table in the old part of the building. Don't stay in that room. You can hear everything going on down below when people are playing pool/drinking The wood floor has cracks in it and you can see directly down into the room below. If memory serves there is no AC in that room either. Stay in a room in the garden part of the building. It"s worth a few extra dollars to do so.

Yeah, that's the room I got. It sucked. I believe #14?? No curtains or blinds so you wake up with the sun. 2 double beds, 1 mattress completely blown out. Old TV and bathroom not nice at all. The worst thing is the key safe is in a corner and the only way to access is on all fours. No A/C. I checked out the next morning. The management knows this the worst room and it is usually given to someone who hasn't stayed thee before.

I'll be staying at the castillo May 1st to May 3, I called and they seemed cool. I stayed there back in 2005, and I never had any problems. This time I am getting the deluxe room. Do these guys give a CRT Discount?

Yep, also a discount for paying cash.

Never a chica fee & the staff is really great.

I just posted some photos I took of room 11 I think. It's a large suite on the 2nd floor. True El O no AC but with some of those big windows open I almost froze. No noise from the street either. Sorry the bed isn't made but it was getting a lot of use since there is no chica fee. Look in tourist and scenery section.

Thanks for posting the photos Bobcat. 8) I've made my reservation May 21 to May 29. I like the location and the no hassle or charges for bringing a guest. Should be a step up from Dianas Inn. 8)
