You really don't need a rental car and the potential problems that come with it, especially on your first trip and minimal Spanish. Since there's 4 of you, the transportation costs will be minimal. A van for 4 guys to Jaco should run about $100-120 each way.

You don't need a car in Jaco. It's tiny, and anywhere you want to go, there are plenty of taxis.
