Nidia RodrÃguez of Terra Nostra said that the country generates 4,500 tons of solid waste a day and that 30 percent of it ends up in streets, vacant lots, rivers and other public places.
Perhaps this is one of the criteria the original poster should have used in arriving at his conclusion. I know for sure that it was one of things I objected to about Costa Rica.
If the estimate is correct, the annual total would be 492,000+ tons per year?????
So, those of you who resent his statement that CR is a sh*t hole might have a harder time arguing that it's a not a "dump."

I did not resent his comments as you put it. I pointed out that his comment regarding the lack of culture and shopping was, in my opinion, not only off the mark but reflected a lack of investigation on his part. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion as to the pro and con of living in any country and others are free to disagree.
If you are comparing San Jose to a smaller, more boring, community in the US, than I will agree. However, I disagree that San Jose is full of culture. It has a few small patches... like China Town (which is a joke compared to others) and the National Theater, which is beautiful. And, a few other places.
When I think of a "cultured" country... I think of a country that treasures its national culture and also is highly enlightened and has places to celebrate others cultures. There are just too many educated people in CR that think that China and Japan are both just Chinos. ((What is the difference between Japan and China anyway???? I never could figure that one out. )) The culture in most of CR is in the Pueblo.... the church... the soccer park... ... the town square... the town drunk.
Of the little that does exist, I do agree that most tourists do not see any of it. In fact, most guys on this board think the word "tica" is synonymous with hooker.
Sorry man - this is how I see it.
