A few random thoughts that I've shared with others on the relative merits of each place. Some guys agree, some don't as each place has their adherants.

I've long been a fan of SL, where I've stayed about 10 times. I also like Amistad, where I've stayed probably 5 times, including the penthouses. Here is my take on both.

Sportmens' rooms are all over the place. Some of the older rooms are not at all attractive to me. I've stayed in Amor, which I didn't like at all. It was small, cramped and difficult to make myself comfortable in. OTOH, another old wing room, Felicidad, is very comfortable. I've stayed there a couple of times and been happy with it. I've stayed in the clubhouse twice and not really cared for the rooms, which are a bit long in the tooth. However, the clubhouse living room is a very nice place for a private party.

Most of my stays have been in the new wing, with Vista del Sol being my most frequent. The bed is very comfortable, the room is good sized, there is a table where I can put my computer and work for a while if need be. The bathroom has plenty of shelf space and works well. The water pressure in SL is always very good and maid service is excellent. The furnishings in the new wing are modern and attractive. IMO, the noise level for the rooms in the new wing, at least the upstairs rooms, is negligible. OTOH, having stayed in Ilusion (the closest room to the bar in the new wing), and El Rey (across the hall from Ilusion), I can attest that the noise from the bar can be a problem. However, the SL bar noise has never woken me up. It is my experience that most of the rooms in the new wing, and in the mansion, are every bit as tranquil as the Amistad.

The mansion is another animal altogether. I already have Leopardo booked for Labor Day and Halloween! I like the mansion bar and always get to meet a few great new there guys each trip.

Of course, there are many other factors that make a great hotel. It has become my habit to check in to SL, get to my room, do a minimal amount of unpacking and then hit the bar. Once I get there and order a drink, I feel as if I am in another world. I immediately lose the frown and begin to mellow out and feel good. I am greeted by a great staff, person after person, all of whom seem genuinely happy to see me and wish for me to have a great stay. Then, inevitably, I run into half a dozen familiar faces, all of whom are just as pleased as me to be at SL.

No doubt, Amistad guests are invited into the mix also. But staying at SL means that I can go back and forth to my room, or wherever, without having to pay my bill. It's nice to have all of your stuff there at the epicenter. I get frequent room service when my favorita is in tow. Also, the SL staff treat her with warmth and respect.

One of my 'things' is that I like to bring a few of my own alcoholic concoctions, prepare them in my room, and drink them in the bar. That has never been a problem and would be impossible if I were staying at Amistad. I also like the fact that I can come and go from the bar/restaurant without having to worry about paying the tab. I usually just settle up at the end of the night (or not if I've been detained elsewhere).

On those occasions when I tend to drink a bit too much, I need only walk a few feet to my room. On many occasions after the bar has closed, several partygoers follow me to the room and the party continues. When I drag my ass out of bed, I slip on a pair of shorts, a t-shirt and some flip flops, and head to breakfast. The free breakfast, admittedly, is not sufficient for me, although I do enjoy the fruit and OJ. Because SL seems to be the gathering place, I usually am able to connect with someone who is going on a MP tour, or just heading out and wants some company. So, I walk another few feet to shower and change. There is a big advantage, I believe, to staying just a hallway away from party central.

I've always liked being able to keep an eye on the ladies congregating at SL. Having a room close by gives a monger the advantage of wooing the lady in the bar, and still having a hard on when you get to the room. I also believe that the ladies are somewhat more incentivized to provide better service to SL residents, given it is where they 'practice.'

Amistad has the advantage of a free breakfast, and free laundry. From what I hear, it is now pretty much dust free. However, the times I stayed there, it was dusty and had its own noise problems. Also, I recall the water pressure being iffy at times. That might have changed with recent renovations. I never had a problem with the ecotourists although I always suspected that they were a bit judgmental.

All in all, I prefer SL. It is somewhat more expensive, but is more in the line of a full service establishment. They treat me extremely well, and I always have a good time there. As I said above, once I arrive, my cares and worries dissipate. Amistad, although a very nice place, doesn't give me that same feeling. When I arrive at Amistad, I unpack so I can get my ass over to the Sportmens. :D Sportsmens, for me, embodies Pura Vida, and allows me to be in the thick of it. Or not, because if I need some alone time, or a nap, I've but a few feet to travel.

Ciaociao

Good post Ciao-

Another thing that needs to be mentioned (particularly if it's your first trip) is SL will provide you with a full house of wingmen to show you around, answer questions, etc..

That can be a huge relief for a newbie. Once you know the ropes, chances are you will enjoy the SL for the same reasons Ciao, and quite a few of us do.

Geez, talk about walking teh dog and coming back to a riot. What's up?

I wrote my opinion of both SL and La Amistad based on my experiences. I have stayed in La Amistad five weeks last year and spend considerable time in many of teh rooms there visiting friends. I like La Amistad nearly as much as Sportsman's. I tried to highlight the differences with a little humor and JOsie/Stephen1 got all butt hurt. Lo siento.

What is this, the second grade? We have little hater jealousy clubs forming up? Pretty pathetic if you asked me.

Ciao – Great post. Let me see if I can answer you with this one;

La Amistad -

Rooms – Lower price than SL – They are ALL Foam beds, and on their majority King Beds. Quiet rooms with just the perfect layout to give you a living room or kitchenette if requested. All the rooms have been remodeled with the latest amenities for your stay. Including small fridges in all rooms but some got full size fridge.

For the geek in you - Wi-Fi plus a wire Ethernet connection in every room.

Penthouses – Lower price than SL - if you need to spread your wings this is the way to go. You will be very comfortable and your chica will love it. To me this is the best value in town. Especially when the price difference between a penthouse and a regular room is only $20-$30 a night.

Water pressure has always been excellent in my rooms and any problems that have pop up have been quickly resolve by the front desk.

Maid service – Excellent. Always a phone call away for extremely helpful and happy to serve personnel.

Front Desk – 24X7 – Never have to wait outside with my chica because of the key-card entry. Taxi service 24X7 at your request – Tours available. Wanted to share a personal experience. My safe just went haywire one night and all of my money was in it. Called downstairs and they send someone to try to fix it. They were not able to do it, so they needed a technician to come in. They front me whatever amount of cash that I needed without question that night.

Breakfast – FREE - At your request and will even cook whatever you want as long as you bring it to them. So if you like T-bones for breakfast, get some the nearest store and give it to one of the cooks for your enjoyment. If not, their complete breakfast menu will cover most of our needs.

Laundry service – FREE – I come from a military background so even my jeans are heavy starch. So the first thing I do when I get to the hotel is to take out all of my clothes from the luggage and give it to one of the maids and 20 minutes later is hanging on my closed, iron and starch. I also like to exercise while in CR, so on a daily basis, they wash and iron my gym clothes.

Discount – CRT discount is 15% off the daily listed rate, 25% off the weekly rate and 35% off the monthly rate. This alone have save me hundreds of dollars already. And is not including the lower price per room compared to the SL. So actually it is thousands of dollars save for this monger.

Overall feel – No walk of shame or any other monger keeping track of my coming or goings. We are always discussing how we like to take the chica out of her game and make her feel more like a date/girlfriend. Well, if you just pick her up at the SL, she still at work. If you pick her up at the DR, she will still feel like she just went to another whorehouse at the SL. And to boot, she may not even feel comfortable going to the SL if the DR is her home ground. I can speak this from experience because many of the girls that I have pick at the DR, will not go to the SL for a drink, dinner or a party. She will go there to Phuck but will leave as soon as the deed is done.

I just love to get away from the action from 6AM-12PM. This is my time to reflect, make phone calls and just chill out without having to look at poon and deal with it in front of me. Kind of hard to do when the chica that you just did is just sitting a few feet away.

It is great not to stay at a MONGER hotel. No matter how we feel about La Amistad it is and is listed as an eco-tourism hotel. If you need to explain your hotel bill to your significant other, it is nice to know that any Google search on the hotel name will not pop up with the word prostitution on it.

I think it might be easy to say that it's nice to relax at LA because it's not a monger hotel. I agree that it isn't but at the same time I'm not sure if it has a choice to be.

To duplicate the atmosphere like the SL has doesn't happen overnight; something I'm sure Matt is well aware of.

So it stands to reason that those who want to completely have no selection at their hotel would never recommend staying at the DR right? I think somethings are being a bit embellished almost liking the SL scene to the DR.

And while JOsie's breakdown is informative I started getting lost when the issue of having chicas at SL came up. In my experience I haven't come across any of those things mentioned. Quite the converse in some cases, for instance; When I've picked up a DR chica, normally if not always I've received a smile when they find out I'm staying at SL.

And as far as getting chicas at SL, if you have girls leisurely partying in your room with no stress or expectations; trust, you've already taken the "work" out of her

I can't attest to water pressure or laundry services but I can appreciate knowing I always have a friend to shoot the shit with at the SL 8)

Nah....more like 7th or 8th grade and the king bees is all worried about their perceived "status".

I have no "personal" beef with Pacman....but come on man....you got more shiit to spout about anything and everthing which has to do with Costa Rica an all points in between. ....And here I thought all these years I'd never be able to find anybody so full of it and willing to express it than myself!

As for "...butt hurt...."....that's a homo thing and something I really suspect you guys are doing back in those "private party rooms" with your "cookie baking"....and "brotherhood"......!!!Image "New man....get out the grease can...." As well....I ain't homophobic, but it sure seems like a lot of the club is heterophobic!!!

You sorta, kinda live in CR and I am learning to respect you may even have some info I can use...(like telling the chica it's all about what you will TELL other guys what you paid....not what you really paid....) but really sorta kind live at Sportsman's Lodge and if you'll check your posts, you'll find you time and again are referring people to the joint. Over and over. Does that get you free pool?

I gonna check with Matt to see if I'm getting the same disquenta as J0sie....gotta go make that phone call now.....

Dewd, I live here. I have a lot of friends who, like me, hang out at the Sportsman's Lodge. Some stay at SL and some at La Amistad. They are both great venues and I like them both for different reasons.

Yes, I am not afraid to post. I try to share what I know about CR and whatever else people ask about. I really don't have much to hide so I share a little more than some. I am glad that you found something useful in one of my posts. If nothing else, I hope you find my posts entertaining. There are enough really serious guys on this board.

I don't take offense when someone disagrees with me. I just ask that they share their reasoning rather than just stating "that's bullshit". I respect their opinion but have a hard time weighing the logic of their argument.

My "status"??   I never really thought about my status on the board. Some guys like me, some guys don't, some could care less. I just try to help guys have a better time. I try to show some of the options that are available beyond who is the latest new MP addition and how little can I pay for a DR girl. I know a lot of guys get bored with the same-old, same-old.

Look me up next trip down. I'll buy the first one and talk your ear off. :P

"To duplicate the atmosphere like the SL has doesn't happen overnight; something I'm sure Matt is well aware of."

matt has no desire to be like the SL, in fact if a chica walked in and sat down by herself it takes him about five seconds to move toward hers asking if she is waiting for someone.

now if we bring the girl in, no problem. completely different business model.

No desire or choice? Well regardless if he wanted to somewhat duplicate it or not, I'm sure he knows it would be tough.

I have no desire to be an underwear model, but then again I don't have that choice either.

Your point is noted Diablo and I think both the SL and LA are great venues with some great differences. 8)

Pac55 your a class act. Seriously! This post just proves it all the more.

I have met both you and Steven1. You both have more in common than you probably both think. I think it's a great idea that you two have a couple of drinks and, dare I say, "bury the hatchet". In fact I'd be glad to join you and buy the first round. :D

I've reserved a room at SL...the cheapest one they have.

Standard regular for $59 a night.

Can't be that bad, can it?

I'm not really picky about hotel rooms. As long as it's got AC.

It's been almost a year since my last trip to SJO. Based on the postings I've read, I am really grieving the loss of my beloved Presidente. It was a fantastic hotel - one of my favorites anywhere in the world, regardless of price. I've probably spent more than a year in rooms there. And they were constantly improving - from the room renovations, to the Gym, to the restaurant. The falling of the Presidente is one of the major reasons I am considering other locales for my next mongering trip.

I remember when the dress code was first instituted. Many were upset but the majority on the boards were reassuring that the Presidente was still a monger hotel... Just have the girl bring a sweater along. It sounds like things took a turn for the much worse. Let's hope the global recession, and lack of ecotourists, convinces them to re-think this policy.

Now, I'm going to try La Amistad - assuming I go to CR. Nothing will ever be as nice for me as the Presidente. But I hope it comes close.
