Preparing for my first trip in April. Have reservations at the FB. Anyone have any useful info to pass along about the place? I understand it does not have a chica fee and is part of CRT.

Also, would the SL be a better choice for a first trip? Or perhaps another hotel? Other than the HDR?

Thanks, guys.

Peace

Go to the SL. I 100% guarantee you'll have a better time staying there than at the Freebird. Not talking bad about the Freebird or anything, its just that the SL is in its own class of awesomeness.

I've stayed there many times and really enjoy the come and go as you please. IDEM is a short two blocks down the street - and while I've never been, the now famous RELAX is just across the street from it.

Dennis the owner is a terrific host - need some 411 on the surroundings just ask him. There has yet to be a time when I'm in San Jose that I haven't seen him touring some of his guests around...

As for the accommodations; reserve a junior suite if possible, the beds are very comfortable, satellite plasma TV, great water pressure with plenty of hot water, and of course my favorite amenity: NO SMOKING ALLOWED!

Freedom,

For the first trip would suggest SL or Amistad as well. You will be much closer to the hub of Gringo civilization and able to meet up with a wingman. Now, on the otherhand if you are a freespirit and and like to explore the MP's alone you will be much closer to the scene at Freebird.

They are both good choices, but as it's your first trip, you should split your time between the two....

Staying at more than one place is a good idea
Then you can see first hand what you like
It only takes an hour or so to look a a few other hotels that want our bussiness look at it like a non -gulch activity
No plan is a good plan but I would have my first couple of holel nights set in stone

I wouldn't stay at Freebird until you know the area a little better.

Is the area around the FreeBird shady?

Only between sunset and sunrise and anytime awareness is lacking...but that describes much of the world!

If I were you, I would take advantage of Sportsman's Lodge's "regulars", monger and working, and let them introduce you to San Jose. Think of it as "home base' and venture out from there (also a great place to seek refuge, count scars and plan ass-alts (culo alternatives).

Freebird is as it's name describes: You are free to do anything you want from there, but you are a solo outpost with only the buds you bring with you. A great place for a few guys who know the ropes but not the best tactical position for recruits, in my humble opinion.

I second this. Amistad is a short 1 block from SL and mucho less dinero, but very nice. Since everyone advises you not to walk after dark in this town, location is great. Big hospital and taxis are also about 1 block away, so no opportunity for the local police to hassle you. Was in HLH today and has a very nice, classy bar and seating areas. SL is about 1 step above your local college or Irish pub.
